dead speakers

I installed some polk db675 speakers today. I was listening to the stereo at pretty high volume but not to the point of distortion, my left speaker suddenly dies and smelled like fried electronics. I turned my stereo back on to try the speaker and its volume stays really low and it sounds extremely static. Does anyone know what this is?

Oh yeah she's a goner. Do you have them amped? If so you could have been over powering them. You know not a nuff power is a bad thing for a speaker, but to much power on a speaker is a terrible thing.

Would it be too much power even though it wasn't distorting?

Yes it could see if you feed more power to a speaker than it is capable of handling. What happens is the voice coil gets to hot and it will burn or melt the voice coil into.
It can only get rid of so much heat. That's why they have power ratings on speakers. The more power you give something the more heat you generate. Understand what im saying. -
Too little power will never hurt a speaker. There are only 2 things that will kill a speaker: 1- too much power causes more heat to build up in the VC than it can dissipate so it dies. 2- too much power causes the suspension to be pushed beyond its limits and it dies.
If you smell burnt electronics then youve overpowered them and the VC's had a meltdown.
If you bought them thru an authorized dealer, get in touch with Polk Customer Service and throw yourself on the mercy of Kim and maybe he'll take pity on ya.
