I was looking thru the setup guide for the Marantz DV-6600, and I noticed the "Dynamic Range Control" (DRC in the menu) setting default was "ON."
I read that as meaning "YES, control the dynamic range, In other words, compress the signal. I'm reading it wrong? Why would the default be to "compress" the dynamic range?
Help...

From Audioholics review:
"One more audio feature to mention is the Audio DRC (Dynamic Range Compression). If youre like me you are probably thinking why in the world would anyone want to compress the dynamic range? Dynamic range is an audio quality we strive to increase. The DV-9500 is a universal player and as such should accommodate as many needs as possible. This feature is for when you are entertaining guests and youre only playing background music or a movie so in the middle of a conversation the sound doesnt all of a sudden become very loud. Like Pure Mode, it would be nice to have a button on the remote to engage and disengage it."
The default is to compress. Ok, we'll be changing that setting.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2 -
give it a try, Steve. My hunch is that the impact is minimal, if audible. But, it's a hunch..I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

The control had something to do with late night viewing. Something about watching a movie when folks were asleep.
