Toshiba today said that it will not launch its HD DVD technology in
Japan by the end of year as previously planned.
The company -- a strong proponent of the blue-laser next-generation DVD
technology and member of the industry group backing it, the DVD Forum --
said that while it has completed the design of HD DVD players for the
U.S. and Japanese markets and is ready for volume production at its
manufacturing facilities in Japan, the launch of HD DVD players and
notebook PCs with HD DVD drives in Japan will be pushed back until at
least Q1 2006.
Toshiba placed the delay's blame on Advanced Access Content System
(AACS), a copy protection management system adopted by the DVD Forum.
Various industry participants are in the process of finalizing the last
details for implementation of AACS.
"Because the DVD Forum has adopted AACS as an integral part of the HD
DVD format, Toshiba will launch its HD DVD products only after AACS is
finalized," the company said in a statement today.
Toshiba said it continues to plan for a Q1 2006 launch in the U.S.
