This is something I have been intruiged with for awhile. Has anyone else noticed that with all the advancements made in technology, that as far a A/V is concerned, we are still battling the original technology.

Take video displays for example. With all the new types (dlp, lcd, lcos, sxrd, dila, plasma) we still can't beat the picture quality of a crt.

Now in audio it is a bit more arguable. However I'm sure many would agree that Tube amplification makes for a more lifelike sound, and that Vinyl is still the best sounding format. Or simply put analog over digital.

I guess it just amazes me that with all the advancements in technology we are still competing against the likes of Thomas Edison.

I think you are right. Just because something is new and "fashionable" doesn't make it better. While CRT, vinyl and even CD may seem old-fashioned, especially in comparison to the likes of iPod and plasma screens, these "old guards" are just now reaching the pinnacle of their technological greatness.

I dunno... I've heard Edison Cylinder players and even my 60's Sears Silvertone SS record player kick the **** outta them...

While I could see myself owning a Tube PREAMP in the future. Its the only piece I could find me owning in the future of that sort.

Tube amps, etc just wont be for me. I need the grunt of Sand amps...

As for records, etc... LOL - I will NEVER own a record player, EVER. Im to much of a clean freak to deal with that, PLUS I like remotes, fast forward and rewind, skip, etc... lol (Not to mention compact, rippable, burnable...etc)

I do like the sound of Vinyl better but, it is not as convienient. Make me an affordable Vinyl cutter that I can plug into my computer and a record player in my car. Then I will be a true vinyl convert.

Keep in mind that digital is still in its infancy. That's why we're seeing so much change, all the time; and not always for the better. Alot of trial & error still happening...

No tubes here, never have liked the sound of them, to me they sound dull, less dynamic, and lack the clarity of good SS.

And I definetly prefer the dynamics of a well recorded CD to vinyl, problem is, most CD's don't seem to be mastered/recorded all that well.

While tubes are great and all, you can get the same performance out of solid state for less and itll be more durable.

As for CD's I simply prefer their sound quality over any other format.

Very interesting. But it was only a sample of 5 albums, I wonder what the results would have been had he picked 5 different albums. I also question running everything through a computer, and using software for the readings. I would rather see in room measurements.

Maybe it is some other factor, distortion, or whatever, But I do prefer the sound of CD's.
