What to Get with My Samsung Refund?

I don't want to jump the gun..BUT.... my technician told me that Samsung was going to refund my money for my set as it is my 3rd replacement and it is still having issues. After going through this for almost a year I told them finally I just wanted my money back.

So..IF..I get my money back I am seriously considering an HP1080p DLp or the Sony SXRD 1080p. My only issue is that my max viewing distance will be 12 feet as I can not rearrange any furniture. I love that that the HP will accept 1080p signals (the only set so far) but I don't know how practical that is now. The Sony looks pretty sweet and is a well established brand. Any thoughts? TIA

I wish there were more 1080 sets on the market for you to have both a few more choices, and for the prices to be more inline with what the 'older' sets are going for. I'd almost say buy something to get you by for a year and see what new stuff comes out also allowing the prices to drop a bit.....

I have the HLR5688 model and for some reason I seem to be jinxed. I may just bring out the old CRT rear projection and wait a little bit.

I agree the Sony SXRD is the best 1080P set out there. A superb image. 12' will be plenty good enough for the 50" set.
As far as how practical the ability to accept a true 1080P signal is? Not very. Other than a high end computer (like a VAIO) signal, the only component in the wings is a hi-def DVD player, and those are still a ways out. Plus, my understanding is that the Sony TV can accept a 1080P signal through the Firewire input, so that leaves possibilities.

Wingnut I can feel your pain. I am currently on the third repair on my Hitachi. 2 light engines down and worse than where we started. This will also be the third repairman as the first one was fired, the second one has transferred and the third one was just hired and doesn't have a phone yet. They have the third engine ordered but I can't say that I am overly confident that this will be fixed. I was told that after three they will deal. My service contract says that after four they have to replace. So I have missed most of the Bears season waiting for my Tv to be replaced

I have been careful not to think about getting a new set (jinx) but I am also looking at the two models that you are. Let us know what you do.

speaking about Sony, I have two XBR series Sony, one 27" from 1994, bought from Silo (anyone remember that chain?), and the other one 35" bought from GG in 1997. Both still going strong, works like it was bought yesterday. Amazing ol' Sony, when quality (XBR) meant something.

I'm having the LCD, Plasma, Tube debate in my head right now, too.

I can get either a 32" flat panel lcd or a 34" tube for the same $$$. The 32" would be really convenient, but only a 2" upgrade in size from the 30" tube I have now. They, of course are all HD widescreens. While the depth and weight of the tubes are a hiderence, they won't necessarily keep me from getting another tube tv. The tubes just have a better picture, imo. I'm also looking at a 37" LCD flat panel, and it has 1920x1080p resolution, but will cost me another $600 for the 3" size upgrade.

This is driving me up the wall.

Do you believe that I was on the phone with Samsung CS trying to find out the status of my refund and they said that since no one had been out to repair this set yet they were going to schedule a service appt. first!?!?!? I said , "you are joking, right? They have been out for this set 3 times already! And they were out here for the set it replaced 5 times!"

What is wrong with these people? They had to call their own service co. to verify. This two weeks after I was already told to send them a copy of my purchase receipt and they would be letting me know the outcome within 5 business days. NOT! I have been going through this with them for 1 year starting with the first GREEN set which had to be returned to Crutchfield. That was replaced with an HLP which was fine for about 3 months then the PQ on that started to go bad. After 5 service calls and multiple parts replacements on that, they decided to replace it with the HLR. For 2 months that had a beautiful PQ..and then it died....twice! I am fed up. I want my money back and my year back. Never again will I get a Samsung set.

Check the times and dates of those two posts. ;)

The Stang is at a dealer as I type getting the power window fixed, the climate control system fixed, the odometer fixed, and the remotes programmed. Had tires put on Monday. More TLC to come. :)

As far as tv's go - I only really consider a SONY. I've looked at others but keep going back to SONY. They just have the technology down right & everyone else keeps trying to play catch up.

Samsung old me yeasterday that they were going to send out another repair guy to look at it again to see if they were going to replace it. They are not going to refund my $ so I guess I am stuck with the model one way or another. Like I said, when it works it's gorgeous but I will NEVER buy another Samsung.

I wouldn't take an HP tv if it was given to me. Period.

The only problem with the SXRD is that it will not accept a 1080p signal.

Mitsubishi 1080p DLP's are the only ones on the market accepting a 1080p signal with no "1080p to 1080i back to 1080p" conversion.

But I'd still take the SXRD on pure picture quality alone.
