Sonic characteristics of various tubes

I am just starting out with getting my tube on. it's not something I'm familiar with, so I need a little guidance. Maybe I can pick your brains a little.
Now I know different designs have different purposes. Is there a resource available for me to get my learn on?
I also know different manufacturer's of the same type of tube will have different characteristic sonic signatures. Is there any place that may have a "description" of these characteristics.
And, of course, I need to find some good places to dump my money...
Any help???
