EDIT: SOLD, Pictures and brochure removed to clear space.

I'm selling my Yamaha DVD-S2300MkII. I figured I'd offer it here first.

I've had this for awhile as a 2nd unit mainly for the audio section, but I can't justify keeping it any longer. I just don't use it enough. It quit playing a couple months ago and I took it in for service under warranty. Now it is fresh back from authorized Yamaha service where they replaced the entire DVD mechanism (all the mechanical and optical parts), a motor control IC, a regulator and a cap in the power supply. I've only put about 20 hours on it since getting it back from service, just to make sure its working properly. With the new mechanism, this is basically like a new player. All the wear items have been replaced!

This was Yamaha's top of the line DVD player through 2003-2004 and their replacement (S2500) doesn't even come close to this unit. This is a heavy (20 lbs), well built (in Japan), universal player (DVD/DVD-A/SACD) with a dual transformer power supply (one analog/one digital), double shell casing, separate audio, video, and SACD boards. It had a $1000 price tag when it was new and was never really discounted much. It has full bass management for SACD, DVD-A, and of course DVD-Video. The video output is no slouch either, its a Faroudja FLI-2200 (DCDi) progressive player that is essentially the same as the top performing Panasonic units from a couple years ago. The Perfect VIsion gave this their DVD Player of the Year Award in October 2003.

Just so you know, the only real difference between the S2300 and the MkII version is the addition of serial control and improved compatibility with SACD hybrid discs (newer firmware).

I really like this player. Deep down, I think its better than my Denon, but there's something to be said for having matching gear. Audio wise, I'm sure the Yamaha is better than my Denon, but the Denon has slightly better video and quicker operation.

Here is a Link to the Yamaha web page.
I also have a PDF brochure attached along with some pictures of the actual unit.

This unit is about as close to mint as you can get. I can't find any flaws. The photos show what I mean. It will include the remote and a printed copy of the owners manual. No original box, but I'll make sure its safe to travel. I'm asking $330 shipped by FedEx Ground to any of the Cont. 48 states. I'll keep it here until Sunday, then it will go to Ebay with a higher BIN price.

Edit: Since the repair shop warranted their work for 90 days, I will warrant this item for repair (not refund) until February 10th. Just ship it back to me and I will take it back to the shop.

Is the Mk II worth the extra $100. It looks like the non MK II version is selling for $250 on the 'bay, based on the completed auctions...

I've seen those auctions. None of them bother to properly describe the unit or have good photos. This is also being warranted by me. The s2300 is a sleeper. Every bit as good as the Denon 2900 and actually better constructed. There is no reason why this isn't worth as much as a Denon DVD-2900 which sells for around $400. I'll keep it for $250.

wasn't questioning your pricing or asking you to justify your price, just wondering if the MK II version is worth the extra $100. I've been looking at several of the ones on Ebay for a co-worker, and was just wondering if the MK II was worth the extra money. If it is, then I'll point him your direction.

I'm not sure how much extra its worth. Depends how bad you need Serial control! I would want the later model if I were shopping.

I will chime in....billbillw, the other main difference is that you can turn your power on/off using the remote. As to the SACD reading thing, I think it just means MKII switches btwn DVD and SACD automatically whereas the original switches from SACD to DVD but not vice versa.....
System 1: Martin Logan Vantage, Rotel RC 1070, B&K Reference 200.2, Music Hall DAC 15.2, Yamaha 2300

    System 2: LSi15 w/db840, Marantz SR8400, Rotel 1080, RM6800 (C&S), Sony X2020ES

System 3: LSi7, Yamaha SW215, Music Hall Maven, Music Hall MMF CD25 w/627opamps

System 4: RTi100, Harman Kardon AVR 230, Panasonic DVD

Well, I didn't say anything about the remote power button because the remote I have doesn't have a discrete power button.

This player was a demo unit at the local HiFi Buys (Tweeter). At purchase time, they grabbed a remote from the back room and we all thought it was the right one, but when I got home and downloaded the owners manual, I realized it was a slightly different. The one I have is the DVD8 (which came with the s2300) and the s2300 Mk2 remote is the DVD10. The ONLY difference is the discrete power button. When I went back to the store, they said it was the only one they had and I was stuck with it.

If I hadn't just ordered a Pioneer 79avi the day before this was posted, I probably would jumped all over it.

Seems to be quite a well-built player. The thing is though, it's tough finding any online discussion about it. There's boatloads of disussion about the Pioneer 59avi, 79avi, Denon 2910, 3910, 5910, and Onkyo SP1000 over at avsforum, but doing a search on this unit brings up crickets chirping. Same thing with searching on usenet, audiocircle, AA, and Audiogon.

Did this unit just not get widespread distribution in the states?

AVSforum is mainly people complaing about problems with their units. If there is no discussion, its probably because there's nothing to complain about. Everyone with the Denon xx10 models are complianing about the "macroblocking" issues which do not affect this Yamaha model or any of the Farudja FLI-2200 models.

By the way, this is SOLD. Thanks Anthony.

Well, that's not *entirely* true, although there are plenty of people over there complaining about just about everything in life. ;)

What I'm referring to are the various and sundry huge definitive "brain dump" threads over in the DVD player forum, that contain hundreds of quite informative posts about different models of players.

They usually start with a press release, followed by speculation, then anticipation, then first reports, reviews, compatibility reports, complaints, etc. They usually take quite a bit of time to wade through, and there is a fair amount of noise, but there's also quite a bit of good compatibility and optimization information to be gleaned. People will share menu settings for various display devices, scalers, etc.

I don't know why there isn't that much talk about the S2300. There really isn't much talk about the Denon 2900 either, but they are both great units. Maybe its because they both had fairly short lives and the sudden onslaught of "upscaling" players.

I was thinking of getting an upscaling unit. I don't think they have the kinks worked out yet, and the prices are a little out of line, as with all new technologies.

    Bill,

Got the package today, very nice job packing it up. You're right, the thing is flawless. I'll post the thoughts and send shack an email for the feedback.

    Thank You,

    Anthony,
I just shipped it late Thursday afternoon. Damn, that was fast! I didn't think it would arrive until next week. Another reason to love FedEx Ground: They do Saturday delivery with no extra charge!

I think FedEx boys have been working hard lately. I had a package sent from NC to CA, on Wednesday, arrived on Saturday. Mind you the packaged was sent Ground. This was last week, so FedEx plane must be working hard. Of course, I am not complaining, 3 business-day for the price of Ground, any time!
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Well I got the player in the HT and all wired up. In a word, WAAAAY COOL!(hey, thats two words). Just as you describe. The video is very sharp and clear. The color is rich and vibrant. Even the better half immediately noticed the difference. The audio section has excellect soundstaging and clarity, with dynamic transients coming at you like a bullet train.

This unit blows the changer I had away. The wife and kids had good intentions, but.... I see this staying right where it's at for a good while.

    Thanks Brutha,

    Anthony

I'm glad that it met your expectations. Have you tried any SACDs yet? That's where it will really shine. Enjoy.
