Well, I used to work at Magnolia, and can tell you that the Definitives are not very good compared to Magnolia's other lines, especially the Prosub series. They are boomy and not very good for music. Additionally, Def Tech publishes only overall frequency responses, which means that 19Hz is not a very usable extension, perhaps 19Hz at -10 to -20 dB. Look for ratings that say 19Hz at +/- 3dB and you'll be seeing realistic numbers.
Honestly, for a great sub with good extension (25Hz at -3dB, believe me, better than the Prosub 100) look at the Dynamo from Martin Logan. A great sub, small, compact, plenty of power and punch for movies, but a real articulate and quick quality for music. At $600, it's not cheap, but the best entry-level sub available from any line, let alone for what Magnolia has to offer. If you can spring for it, the Grotto from Martin Logan is the next step up, and a bit better at giving you that really low LFE rumble.
Def Tech subs are ok, and the Supercube series is decent if your primary use is Home Theater and rap music. Anything else and it muddies it all up with boomy bass. You get more boom, at the expense of actually being able to discern the bass line notes, which Martin Logan does best in my opinion.
If you listen to music even 20% if the time, don't get a Def Tech sub.

If any salesman uses the term HighEnd and quotes a normal price of under $500 for a sub, he is lying. I am not saying that there are not decent subs available for that price, but I would question calling any of them high end.

I would say (in my opinion) that REAL subs (that can be called high end without crossing your fingers or your nose starting to grow) start in the $600 range and go up to the "you spent WHAT on a sub?" range from there.

    Just my opinion,

    Michael
    Mains.............Polk LSi15 (Cherry)
    Center............Polk LSiC (Crossover upgraded)
Surrounds.......Polk LSi7 (Gloss Black - wood sides removed and crossovers upgraded)
    Subwoofers.....SVS 25-31 CS+ and PC+ (both 20hz tune)
    Pre\Pro...........NAD T163 (Modded with LM4562 opamps)
    Amplifier.........Cinepro 3k6 (6-channel, 500wpc@4ohms)

    DT subs are BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

And I am the biggest, loyalist DT fan you will EVER see.
    - Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.

This is well under $300, and free shipping to boot:

This sub really impressed me for the price, so much so that I got an Energy s12.3, which is basically Energy's 12" inch version of the same sub. Energy and Mirage use the same drivers, amps, and cabinet dimensions (same manufacturer).

The color of the Mirage is a dark charcoal grey, not the brown that is appears on the site above.

Unfortunately, uless you find something great used, anything under $500 is going to be ****. Especially for jazz, which requires quick, musical subs to sound good at all. If your friend doesn't care, and has no ear for what a good sound system is, you should be fine spending only $300. Honestly, you should buy him something else and let him save up for a better sub himself.
