Burglarized

Well, I guess it can happen to anyone... I got home from work yesterday evening to find that someone broke into my apartment. As soon as I walked in the front door, I noticed that lights were on in the kitchen and both bedrooms. I walked in the kitchen and a window next to the back door was pried up about 2" and the door was unlocked. Not too much was taken that we're aware of yet, but the stuff that was stolen was fairly expensive -- my girlfriends Dell laptop (w/ all the pictures she's taken from the last 3 years), her 2-month old Canon Digital Rebel XT, my Seiko watch which was a gift from my brother six years ago, my AMEX card, a box of my checks, and some other small items. Now we're worried that whoever the **** was will come back after seeing all the other goodies in the place. The cops said it's probably just some junkie grabbing small stuff that can be sold on the streets for a few rocks, but the GF is really worried now. It pisses me off to the extreme to know that some **** was in my place, going through my stuff, and all during the day! This happened sometime between 7:30 AM & 5:00 PM. I wish I could find the **** and throw his **** in front of the #22 Clark St. bus.

I spent about two hours last night on the phone with AMEX, my bank, and my insurance co. (which happens to be the same as my bank). This is a huge pain in the ****.

    wodam,

Stay after the bank and CC companies. It sucks to be a victim but it would suck even more to have your identity stolen.

    Sorry for your loss,

Grr...man, I feel for you. You never know how it feels until someone has been in your home, un-invited, ravaging through your ****. You're right to be concerned about the thug coming back for stuff, but hopefully doesn't happen. I'd take some time off work in the coming days and make the place inviting again and then wax that **** if he ever shows up again.

Truly sorry to hear this, really makes you feel naked.

It sucks. About 4yrs ago my apartment was broken into and my Glock 22 stolen. Oddly enough, they didn't touch any audio or the 60 bucks sitting on my dresser. Do you have renters insurance?

I will return everything tomorrow. I had no idea it was a member here.

    Sorry again.

Luckily I have renters insurance, so I should get some money back, though I don't know how much and I'm still out the $250 deductible. My girlfriend and I have decided that we're not going to renew our lease in April and are looking into high-rises. I wish I had a dog, but they're not allowed in my building. I bet just having a dog present deters so many intruders. We've got no alarms other than these little boxes on the windows that scream when they're opened high enough. This particular window didn't have one of those alarms, and I doubt it would have gone off anyways, since the window was only jacked up about 2" or so. The only thing I can do for more security until I move is put a dead-bolt which requires a key on both sides on the back door and maybe a sliding lock that slides into the frame. Hopefully, by some stroke of luck, the CPD finds something, but I very much doubt it. I think I'll be bringing one of my Pop's 16 gauges back with me after I go to visit them in New Orleans in a few weeks. I would rather take a pistol, but I can get arrested for having one in Chicago.

I trust my Rotty to protect all things inside my home when I am gone.

Anyone who wants to break into my home would be better off to do it when my dog is home alone as he will be less of a threat than I will be.

The police need only hear my side of the story.

Just as a positive note, burglars VERY rarely break into the same place twice, simply because they know that everyone always beefs up security AFTER something happens. I wish I had some numbers to back this up.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Wodom1 - you need to also be careful with where you have the shotgun. Little Dickie Daley's ordinances make it illegal to transport or have posession of a firearm in some parts of the area. I would check that out prior to bringing the shotgun home with you! I don't want to see you have any additional hassles! If you do catch the *&!&$^ thief, I have a lot of farm ground in IA and even when the grounds froze I have equipment that will dig a hole and hide the body. Two weeks before my wedding I moved into our apartment. Got home one night to find the door busted in and a few things missing. My entire apartment was searched. It's a very weird feeling knowing someone went through your stuff.

Funny thing is, as I was moving in, there was this guy hanging around watching me so I gave the cops a discription, never did hear anything.

Plant some live wires around the stereo and power them up when you leave. Honest officer, he just didn't know you shouldn't grab those cables like that. No sir, I didn't think to turn off the power when I saw him laying there shaking... :)

This is probably being shown in our prison system so the convicts can learn even more than they teach each other.
