*waits for Russ' obligatory "eff monster" post*

That's a nice price on what sure looks to be a beefy power center!
    Ludicrous gibs!

Very Nice indeed, I haven't even seen it that low on the used (ebay) market.

Wow, that's super cheap. They must be trying to clear them out. I predict they'll sell out in a hurry. Nobody else sells this for less than $250.

I've got the mkII version and it works really well. It has tripped about 5 or 6 times during the last 2 years, during heavy storms.

This is probably a dumb question, but whats the difference between a power conditioner and a surge protector?

A surge protector takes the hit in the event of a large power surge (lightning and the like), sacrificing itself to protect your equipment. Beyond that, it does nothing.

A power conditioner is working all the time to level out any dirty power that you might have in your house. Let's say you're listening to your rig, and the furnace kicks on. That may cause a "snap" in your audio, from the furnace sucking down a large initial amount of power. A power conditioner would smooth that out and eliminate the snap. Those types of thing...
    Ludicrous gibs!

Power Conditioners are supposed to provide protection in surges (spikes) from the outlet. They are also supposed to provide some EMI protection, as well as keeping the power to the components consistant. In my experience though the monster products do not keep the voltage constant, at least it isn't constant on the analog/digital meters. I have seen it vary from 119 to about 116 volts.

Surge Protectors simply protect the component by shunting any power spikes to the ground wire....

I don't own the AVS2000 that monster has, but I can tell you from seeing them on display (take it for what its worth), that they add or subtract voltage variations to keep the power close to 120 volts.

I guess to have the best of both worlds Monster would like you to use both of their products, by plugging the "conditioner" into their AVS2000 stabilizer, and then theoretically you will get a constant "conditioned" 120 volts to your gear..

    scott

Edit: I plan on getting the AVS 2000 as soon as it comes down to a "reasonable" price point. And plugging in my HTS5000 and HTS5001 to it.

I think I am currently using a Monster PB1100. I'm planning to move in a few weeks to an older building, and I'm concerned about protecting my equipment. If I understand correctly, it sounds like the power conditioner would be more of a complent to my current powerbar than it would a replacement/upgrade.

I think you would be OK with your PB1100, as it also offers protection to your equipment...

I got one! Can't beat the price. Like anything, you can spend a lot of money on power conditioners, surge protectors, etc. I plan to install a whole house surge protector at the electric service box next Spring, cost about $700. For the time being this is a great deal.

I got one, and it was at my door yesterday. I hooked it up and looks good. The voltage meter stays constant at 124 volts after I turn it on. I don't see any fluctuations at all. Is this good?

    Which is better?

    The Monster HTS-3500?

    or

    The Belkin PureAV PF40?

They're both about the same price but looking at the specs - the Monster is around 5 pounds while the Belkin is around 15. Also, the PF40 has more inputs in the back and a surge protection of around 6500 while the Monster 3500 has less than 3000....

    What do you guys think?

I think Monster has the specs wrong on their site. Shipping wieght is 17.5 pounds.

Anyone know if this would be an improvement over a Panamax 4300?

I have a panamax and I like the security it provides me.
It has only tripped once so far but that may just have been the one time I saved thousands of dollars.
    Great piece of mind.

I do not know about the monster product but from what I have read about the company I would not waste my money supporting them and paying for their advertising budget.

I have to agree, they do have a bloated advertising bucket and it shows in their MSRP, but at 135.00 I have to say this is a deal. I wouldn't of paid 599.00 for the 5100 either. But I cut a "deal" at the local Good Guys, (RIP, Closed down recently) for two of the 5100's for 700.00, (floor models), and that was a great deal to me...

I too don't find Monsters practices to be too appealing, but this was a good deal. I have had prior issues with Dell on lousy CS, but once the deal comes along, it just doesn't matter.
