Say Amigos,
I'm a bass freak. I have a pair of rt1000's fronts, and a 450 sub.
Question is: if I add a second 450 sub. should I use the 180 degree phase on one of them?
let me hear you,

Flip the switch and you'll have your answer! Logically, I'd say no. They both should be set the same......Unless there's something weird about your set-up.

Would they be set in the same phase even if one is in the back of the room and one is in the front of the room?

Some peeps say you MUST reverse the phase on ONE of the subs, in a 2-sub setup.
I don't follow this belief. You need a buddy first of all, and YOU need to sit in the sweet spot and listen. Have him toggle it, and find the depth of bass you like. You should be able to tell an obvious difference. I don't think placement matters too much, most rooms being small(er) than say, 40x40, bass freq waves being so large.... and room acoustics/furniture...standing waves...yadda yadda yadda...
To switch phase, or not to switch phase, THAT is the question.

I assume your second sub is going to be fed from your rear speakers, in which case I'd use the normal phase (same as what's working in front), and place the speaker in the rear facing forwards. This will move the air in a manner most similar to how it would be moving with large rears and no sub, only now you can move more air and enjoy more bass. (If you put the sub in front, you've got a trickier situation, but I'd still try normal phase first no matter where that sub sits, assuming it is facing towards you.)
Another option would be to drive BOTH subs from the mains (or sub-out), with both in front. Again, same phase. I think this might be the better choice, since you'll "double" your bass whether there's bass in the rears or not (assuming the rears are set to "small").
Having merely one sub, I can only speculate. Let us know how it turns out! -
Thanks all for getting back to me. I bought the second sub. today. BTW, they sit in the rear, one on either side of the sofa,
facing forward. I will play around with it a bit tomorrow, but so far,
in the same phase, sounds...or should I say feels excellant.
Now both sides of the sofa are shaking.
cheers,
