AVIs to DVD

I have some AVI files I got of a TV show and want to copy them to a DVD. So far my success has been limited. I managed to get one on, but the quality is less than good (and it was recorded from an HD channel [not by me]). For other ones, I can only seem to get 2 episodes onto a disk. Is it me, or is there some tricks to try? Any help would be appreciated. (I do have a couple of good DVD production programs, but just don't know how to use them well).
