Corporate "Down-sizing"

interstate bakeries corporation, better known to the rest of us as hostess has really got me flamed!!! why oh why do companies jip us consumers all the time just for a marginal profit? we get less product for the same price or more expensive a price than what we paid for in the past. i'm referring to 'twinkies'. i bought a package of ten the other day and just now had a major twinkie jonesing. i proceeded to open the package only to find that the wonderful hostess company shrank my snack. these things are now the size of 'zingers'. i just don't like it when companies do this sort of thing.

Q: what other foods have ya'll noticed 'shrinkage' from those of the past?

Are you sure you didn't pick up a Twinkie Mini? I've seen them in stores around here before. They are like 1/2 to 2/3rds the size of a regular Twinkie.

Wendy's is now giving you the medium size fry with a value meal instead of the "Biggie". now you have to "biggie size" it to get a biggie. I don't even know if they make the great biggie anymore. Horseshit!

Hey, there's a whole tribe of us 70's burn-outs who lived on twinkies for years---and we thrive today--well, ok; one of us has a kidney stone...LOL!

Sorry for the derail Bill, back on topic: seriously though, potato chip companies are the biggest offenders; 3/4 of the bag is air.

I always wondered though, if 3/4 of the bag wasn't air, wouldn't about 4/4 of the bag be crumbs?

We're really feeding the stereotype about fat americans in this thread though.

There is a bunch of stuff I've seen in stores from Hostess that isn't on the website. It might be old stock or something but I remember seeing the mini cupcakes, mini twinkies and mini other stuff too. I'm not up on the names. Hostess isn't real big out here because we have a regional company called Tastykake that many people like better. That and Drake's makes all of the Yodels, Ho-Hos, Ding-Dongs, Ring-Dings and Devil-Dogs. It can actually be hard to find Hostess stuff sometimes around here.

My company's pizzas shrunk all sizes from 10,13,and 15 inches to 9,12 and 14 inches about 10 years ago. It was only due to competitors having the smaller sizes and we couldn't compete in the same pricing structure.

Different companies have done so for many reasons.

Get yourself a tastykake care package, if they still have them. They will take an assortment of the most popular and ship them anywhere in the world. I sent a couple of care packages to Hawaii once to a bar for the bartenders there. They were originally from NJ and we asked them what they missed most and one guy said Tastykakes. So I called a friend who was working for Tastykake at the time and he had 196 packages of Tastykakes sent to the bar.

I like them way better than Hostess stuff. That's just me though. So people don't like them. My favorites are Chocolate juniors and Butterscotch Krimpets.

Here is a link for Drake's Cakes. It looks like they are owned by the same company that owns Hostess. I think Drake's is only a Northeast thing though.

Here is a place you can get Drake's Cakes online: http://orderdc.com/catalog/index.php

another 'downsizing'/price rise is costco's starkist tuna. i always got the 12 bulk pack from there because it was cheap. went there the other week and now they raised the everyday price like $2. now it's cheaper to just hit any grocery store and buy what's on sale.

Candy bars do this all the time.

First they advertise 33% less fat on their 33% smaller candy bar then they advertise 25% more when they put it back to original size and mark it up another $0.05.

    Eff em.

I heard from a reliable source that it only takes $.05 cents per pound to get cereal to the shelf.
Cereal is over $4.00 per box (less than a pound) all the time and they make a killing on it.

    No more cereal.
    No more twinkies.
    No more ripping us off.

Lets start a movement here to boycoyt everthing that is a rip-off.

    And really, really hungry.

Buy the generic cereal if you think the big cereal companies are ripping you off. Personally I think it's worth it to pay twice as much cuz the generic stuff tastes like cardboard.

I can't remember when that 1lb coffee can contained a pound of coffee.

On the twinkee thing, I just heard on the radio (from an health guy) on how bad they are for you. They are checking the shelf life of a twinkee, and after 15 years it's still soft. But they say don't touch it because the plastic wrapper is starting to get brittle!
