How was your weekend? 'cause mine SUCKED, ROYALY! . Sorry but I just have to vent a little.

Last Wed morning early while getting ready for work (almost 200 miles south of home), I was struck with a pain witch I can only describe as excruciating . Well, it lasted for about an hour and a half and stopped. I said wow, I'm glad that's over and went into work late. Got to work and it started all over again. This time I ended up in an emergency room. A CAT scan later and it was found I have two kidney stones. One right (the side that was hurting) and one left. Wonderfull. Spent the morning there then did some work in the afternoon all doped up (someone else driving my TV rig for me). I was to see a urologist Thursday but said I had to work and I had to go through my doctor for insurance purposes anyway and made an appointment for Monday. Well, didn't quite make it till Monday. Saturday moring the pain came back in full force (5 1/2 hrs straight just the first round) and I ended up in the emergency room up here. Xrays and another CAT scan verified the same. With no passing of the stone all day Sat they admitted me for the night and throughout today. It still hasn't completed it's journey but I'm home to ride it out. I'm on some new meds that will hopefully help move it better but the same med will probably get the other stone moving too. How lucky can a guy get?

I'm sure someone out there knows what I'm going through.

1st off, I've heard that the best way to pass a stone naturally is to drink a case of beer and piss it all out. You won't feel a thing, and if you do, you won't remember it for sure :)

Another option is to have them break up the stones via some kind of ultrasonic thingy. I forget what they call it, but it's totally painless... they just pinpoint where the stone is and blast it with these ultrasonic waves that breaks it up. What it does to the rest of your organs, I've no idea :)

Good luck to you... and next time lay off the cheese and tea

I've never had kidney stones....but they scare the hell out of me. I only have one kidney and the thought of stones sends me into cold chills just thinking about what I might have to go through. Hopefully if/when the time come they will be able to use a lithotriptor (nadams' "ustrasonic thingy") and not have to do any cutting.

Best of luck...I FEEL you pain (in my mind anyway). I hope everthing "comes out" OK.

I good friend of mine had Kidney Stones a few months ago. He ended up having the ultrasonic thing done to get rid of them. About six months after he had that done, he got another one and had to go through it all over again. After hearing him describe how painful they were, I'm hoping it's something I never have to experience.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and good wishes.

G'Man. Like an **** is being nice about it and doesn't really begin to describe it does it? ;)

If this puts it into perspective at all...
So far I've been told by two nurses and another female who've all had children and stones say that they'd take birthing pain over stones any time! I have a sister (with two children) who's gone through it confirm the same. My father says if my mother was still with us she'd have to agree. Yup, it's that much fun!

At any rate I'm off to the doctor right now. I'm feeling no pain at the moment as nothing seems to be moving right now and they have me on a cocktail of Vicatin (spelling?) every four hours, Motrin on the 2nd hour between each dose and doubling up if I feel anything happening. One stone almost done........

but one that has the entire trip to go!!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately it looks like they don't sonic blast a stone unless it's of a rediculous large size that could never pass nor be removed by normal sugery. If mine don't pass they'll have to send surgical tools up........ you don't want to hear...

I feel for you Bob, but I can attest that once those pups get down into your bladder, the final trip into the outside world is pretty anti-climactic. Shot four out so far and on each and every one, if I wasn't looking, I wouldn't have known they exited. The pain is caused by the trip from the kidney TO the bladder.

After I zipped out my first in 1989, the docs discovered another one stuck in a cave-like opening of the kidney called a calyx. The stone was already inside the cave, and bigger than the opening to the cave. No problem, can't get loose. HOWEVER, the regs say I can't fly with one of those in my body, so I had to have it smashed with ultrasound, so the pieces would be small enough to fall out the calyx and out my hooter. The ultrasonic event was okay, but unremarkable. I fell asleep in the tub full of water while they were doing it, which I understand was a first for all those folks.

    Bummer for the problems.
I only hope to never be this lucky.
I allways thought the pain came when you tried to squeeze the stone out where only liquid should go.

havent had a stone yet, but have seen many kidney stone patients on the ambulance. I've seen men reduced to crying wimpering schoolgirls from the pain, frustrating part is I cant do a damn thing for them but drive em to the hospital while they emit blood curdling screams

They're no fun, for sure. I hope I never have them! I don't know how many my dad has had, but Mom says he started with them in highschool and, in my 18 years, I can remember at least twice that he's had them. And he's going through it again as we speak.

Last time he had the lithotripsy (think that's what it's called) done because it was so big. I wouldn't say it's totally painless. Dad was sore and in bed for a while, and couldn't lay on that side.

His dad also had kidney stones. After going through the ordeal, he was at the local store/pharmacy/whatever it was, shooting the breeze with several neighbors, and someone asked him about it. He said, "Well, let me put it this way. For the first few hours I was afraid I was going to die. Then for the next few hours I was afraid I wasn't going to die!"

Hope you don't have to wait too long to pass 'em.

Sorry to hear Bob, I've never had one personally, best of luck.

I'm in a different sort of pain right now. Last Thursday morning my daughter (8) swallowed a quarter. Her second x-ray this morning shows it still in her stomach. The doctor pur her on "Metoclopramide" this morning to help it pass, if it does not by Wednesday they have to put her too sleep and go in a get it. It's an emotional pain vr the physical you've got right now.
