AMD's coolers have come a long way with the new Athlon and Sempron chips. They now have at minimum a copper core. I know the benefits of an aftermarket heatsink, but for 95% of the users out there, the stock heatsink is just fine. I run various distributed computing projects on my machine here at work, which run the processor at 100% all the time, and I"m running a stock AMD cooler on an Athlon64 3000+, and it's been just fine for about a year now.

On my computer at home, I ran the stock cooler on my Athlon XP 2100+ for two years, then went to a quieter HSF a little later.

AND- voiding the 3 year warranty on a $250 or more processor is not my idea of fun!
    Ludicrous gibs!

Decreasing the life of the processor core and other components in my system isnt my idea of fun either.

X2.... the processor is not the only one affected by heat inside the case, as I said previously. Why would you settle for something that's OK when you can get something BETTER for a few extra bucks...

we all are entitle to a different opinion...and that's fine! ;)

btw, processor warranties arn't really necessary for longer than 1 year. after 1 year the chip will be worth what? - 1/4 of its purchased value? also, the chances of a processor being defective from the factory are slim. a failed processor is usually due to heat...because of a cheap ineffective cooling system and lets also think about all the other devices dissipating heat in the system....hard drives, optical drives, video card, sound card, ram, the motherboard itself.....lots of heat being generated...if you dont have a proper airflow system installed then you're just asking for trouble down the road.

It's huge because they don't show it to scale with the rest of its accessories. A nice marketing trick, for sure.

Oh, and the reviews aren't too favorable:

"It is impressive looking and that is the only thing good about it. I installed on an AMD processor and motherboard with included brackets and their instructions. This thing is heavy and slides around on the processor. Trying to stop the slide I cracked the processor. Many dollars down the drain because of this giant bug. Stay away from this thing."

"Ok i built a comptuer for my friend and a few months later he tells me that the comp is overheating and so i go and take a look at whats up and the heatsink fan stoped working... also they didnt send me the right pieces for the lga 775 hookup so i wouldnt recomned this fan... although it does look awsome and when it works it does move alot of heat. it actually kept my friens cpu clocked at 4.1 gig at a lower temp then my cpu clocked at 3.4 and i have a thermaltake typhoon so it is a good fan just doenst last very long..."

"If you own a Socket 478, be prepared to spend a lot of 'quality' time with this. I have an Asus PC4800-E motherboard and it doesn't fit too well with it. The fan intake actually faces down at my video card, which makes the air movement a bit more noisy. It has the appearance that it cools like a champ, but I'm about to replace it with something smaller."

"after 2 months my fan stopped working, processing an rma on it, it worked great for the time i had it, and its known that the fan is a problem on this product, other then the fan i liked it."

"ok worked great, but 2 months later the fan dyed. thermaltake is taking forever to rma it and i am lucky that i dint loose my cpu. but i was able to clock a 1.8 duron to 2172 with it"

Try to pick a better example next time, eh?
    Ludicrous gibs!

just an example....but from what i read in those reviews...it does perform more efficiently than the stock cooling solutions and that is not the only aftermarket heatsink available.
