If you consider that there have been an average of 160,000 troops in the Iraq theater of operations during the last 22 months and a total of 2112 deaths, that gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000.

The rate in Washington D.C. (among others) is 80.6 per 100,000.

That means that you are about 25% more likely to be shot and killed in the Nation's Capitol, which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation, than you are in Iraq.

Conclusion: We should immediately pull out of Washington D.C.

Cute. Sounds like one of those nice little urban myth soundbytes that one side or the other drums up for publicity. Problem: that 2112 death toll includes more than just shootings (crashes, accidents, etc.).

    Also, how is that math derived? Is this an annual figure? 2112/2 = 1056 per year. 1056/160000 = 0.0066. 0.0066 x (11/12 months) = 0.00605 = 60.5 per 10,000 or 605 per 100,000.

    Big difference.

Funny, but bad math. The real figures are 720 in Iraq vs 37 in DC, per annum in the same time period... the 80 per 100,000 per annum was for sometime in the early 90's.

    Sorry- statistician here.

Let's keep this in perspective. The vast majority of the gun related deaths in DC are in poor, drug infested areas, not areas that "normal" people would step foot in. Darwin's theory at it's finest.

    Bush the Post Turtle

A 70-year-old Texas Rancher got his hand caught in a gate while working cattle. He wrapped the hand in his bandana and drove his pickup to the doctor. While suturing the laceration, the doctor asked the old man about George W. Bush being in the White House.

The old Texan said, "Well, ya know, Bush is a 'Post Turtle.'"

Not knowing what the old man meant, the doctor asked what a Post Turtle was.

The old man looked at him and drawled, "When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a Post Turtle."

The old man saw a puzzled look on the doctor's face, so he continued to explain:

"You know he didn't get there by himself, he doesn't belong there, he can't get anything done while he's up there, and you just want to help the poor dumb **** get down."
