I have 5.1 onkyo receiver cheap one from an HTIB I have a pair of Rti10's and Rti4's. If I set my receiver with just two channels will it distribute more power to the fronts versus powering a sub, and surrounds at 5.1?
Setup:

2 Channel: Vienna Acoustics Mozart Grand, T+A P 1230R, Primare SPA21, Oppo BDP-105
PC: Vienna Acoustics Haydn Grand, Cambridge Azure 650A v2 , Peachtree iDAC, Denon DVD-3800BDCI

    I'm just curious, were KrazyMofo1 - 23 taken already?

doubtful that will happen. and your sub doesn't use power from the receiver.. subwoofers have their own built in amps. unless it's a passive subwoofer. which i doubt you have.

The fewer speakers a receiver has to drive, the more power it has in reserve. You have to keep in mind that receivers have only one power supply. If you are tyring to drive 5 speakers there is going to be less in reserve.

Also a powered sub only draws a low level signal from a receiver. So it will not take away from the power available to other speakers.

    Hope this helps.

Is the sub powered? I know my folks bought a HTIB and its sub was not powered. If that's the case, then I'd say switching to 2-channel would also get some extra reserves that the sub was using up. But if the sub is powered, you'd probably only gain via what everyone else already said, since powered subs don't pull much. Even then though, you might notice your Rti10's sounding better. When I had an AVR hooked up to my LSI's (stupid me), I know the Lsi15's sounded much better once I flipped it to 2 channel.

If you really want more power, ya gotta pay for it. The 10's will sound much better with more power.

I know getting a new receiver is the solution, I was just asking in the mean time while i'm saving for a new one. I didnt mean just the sub I meant not powering the Rti4's as well.
