Upgrading my HT which is currently Polk's RM6000, so far i have a csi5 center and fxi3 surrounds(ebay). Will be purchasing rti8's or 10's as mains. Polk is offering a $200 discount on subs and I was considering the psw505 for $300 after discount. Would I be better off spending the extra money and going with the SVS PCI 25-31 at $549 + shipping? 75% movies 25% rock music. Thanks for any advice.

CSi 5
FXi 3's

    Yes...

SVS will hit lower... harder... and will go louder.

    Worth the extra money.

Theres going to be that "what if" and "I need to upgrade" feeling if you get the "lesser" sub.

I have the PSW 505 and the SVS 20-39 PC+ and SVS PB10 subs. The PSW 505 is under-rated in my humble opinion. Sid is right, it will go lower, louder, and make things inside your body move. Depending on room size, listening preferences, etc., the 505 for $300 may not be a bad choice. It has clean hard hitting bass down to about 32 hz. If you are in close proximity to neighbors (i.e. an apt.) the 505 might be a good choice until you get into a more bass friendly environment. On the other hand, SVS is never a bad choice and will most likely be the only sub you need to buy.

The PSW505 is probably the only subwoofer that actually wasn't too bad.

PM PolkThug. If I recall he went from 2 PSW505's to 2 SVS PB-10/ISD's and he hasn't complained....that would also save you some money. The retail on a single PB10 puts your question a little more in perspective.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Yep, the 505 is pretty good, but the SVS will give you solid 16-26Hz(aka "really really deep bass") in room response that the 505 can't deliver.

I have a 505 that I paid a mear $229 otd from CC (demo unit ) . For the price and for my usage its been a good sub . I did replace the power cord with a beefier one which helped tightened up the base . The more my 505 is used the better its sounded over the past 18 months .
When the the time comes (upgrade bug) , a SVS will be on my list (with some RTi10'/CSi5/Fxi3s) , but for now and including the end price I paid .... Iam a happy camper .

If you can afford to go SVC , go for it ... it not ...then $300 for the 505 should do you nicely .

Here are the differences between the two subs you mentioned...
    PSW 505
    http://www.eandr.biz/ASISTLSPolkAudioPSW505.html

    SVS PCi 25-31
    http://www.eandr.biz/ASISTLSSVSPCi2531.html

The SVS has a much beefier woofer with more excursion, more cone surface area. A larger enclosure, a beefier amp, lower tuning...

Also takes up less floor space...

Thanks for the input guys, looks like I will be going with the SVS based on the popular opinion here. Now that that's decided, which would be a better choice for mains to go with the SVS PCI 25-31? The RTI8's or10's. I listened to both and could not make a definite choice. I will have to go back and do more listening to decide. Thanks again for the help
