IPOD, Nano or Mini?

My two teenagers are looking to up grade their RCA MP3 players to IPOD’s. Their looking at the Nano’s(flash mem) Vs Mini’s(disc mem). I guess you can still pick the Mini’s up on clearance. I’m personally not an MP3 guy myself because I can hear a very noticeable loss in sound quality from a CD to a MP3. But sound quality is not what these guys are looking for. Anyway, any recommendations between the Nano and Mini?

The Nano's either a 2 or 4gb model.....when you say mini are you talking about the shuffle without the display? If that's the one you're meaning, I'd stay away from anything that has no display.

I know a guy who has a Nano and loves it (also has 40 GB iPod and Mini) - Flash memory certainly has the advantage of not being succeptible to skipping like a hard disc with shocks, etc. And it is really a lot smaller. I'd vote Nano given the choice - unless they are looking for greater size storage.

If you have very active teens, then get them the nano with a case to prevent scratches. Hard drive based ipods are prone to skip if jostled and they're last year's craze. Your teens will appreciate you getting them getting them the latest.

The mini's may be "last year's craze", but the hard drive full-size iPods are still very much in-style. If you'r eonly choosing between the mini and nano, I would lean towards the nano... the only problems being they scratch easy, adn when they say nano, they aren't kidding. Those things are almost TOO small. I played with one and found it ALMOST too small to be usable.

Then again, it's almost kinda hard to find a mini nowadays.

It really depends. The Nano only comes in 2gb and 4gb, while the Mini has...umm....of course I forget now that I need to say. Suffice it to say more memory, lol. I'd agree that the Nano is almost too small. It's right on the edge and varies from person to person, I'd say.

I'm looking to get an iPod one day (I think), and I don't want the Nano or the Mini. I want the big ol' 60gb one.

Well the mini is no longer produced from what I can see, but I think it was 4 or 6 GB. Almost the same as the nano.

Really? I thought it was bigger than that. The 'regular' iPod comes in something like 10, 20, 30, and 60gb, I think. I want the 60gb! :D

I didn't believe it myself, but a search of ebay confirms 4 and 6 GB minis only.

Current generation iPods are 30 and 60 GB. They used to have 20's.

20's were replaced by the 30's a year or two ago, and since then now they're pushing the video feature on their new line. They also use to have a 40gb if i remember correctly, which is what the 60 has now become. In this same timeframe, the full size Ipod has also dropped a franklin.

I would get the Nano-looks better IMO, won't skip and, is easier to find (I also think the minis look girlie). But, for not awhole lot more cash, you can get a full size. Easier to hold MUCH more storage and, it plays video. just food for thought though

How do minis look girly, but the regulars and the nano's look fine to you? THey're the exact same designs, in three different sizes, and you think the middle size looks girly?

    Just odd, that's all :)

I'd pick the nano because if you're going for around that size of storage space (2 - 4 gb) I'd want the reliability of flash instead of having a hard drive. I personally think that the full size ones are way nicer because then you don't have to compress the hell out of your music.

You could always go a different route... I use a pocket pc with a 1 gb sd card and I can do WAY more with it than you could even come close to with an iPod. For example right now on it I have - 35 songs, 3 floyd albums, and five and a half hours of movies. No iPod so far can touch a 3.5" TFT touch screen ;) One drawback is that they are a little bigger than a mini and you have to worry about not breaking the screen. The nano is far smaller than a pocket pc or ipod mini... I'd be freaked out of sitting on it and breaking it or something.

    I have a new "mini"...4gb
If I had to do it again, I would get the Nano...just for the coolness factor..
They are the same price (199.00), but I don`t need 4g of music to tote around..I`m not gone that long..!!

Never had a problem with the mini, once I figured out how to actually get the music into it..!!

I also got a Total Bithead amp and some Sure e4/c ear buds..it really rocks..!
    I used it twice..!!

Probably sell it all and get my Momo 6x9`s though..!!
I only got it to travel to PolkFest with...but didn`t get the music into the unit on time so I couldn`t use it..!!

Sounds like they’ll end up with the Nano’s. I like the point’s about flash memory being a more rugged technology.
    Thanks guys!

Nano would of been my choice if I had not gotten the Ipod Video 60gp. It is very portable. I went with the full size Ipod because of the accessories you can purchase for it and my constant traveling. Nothing like watching Lethal Weapon in your hotel room by pumping the video from the Ipod to the TV, or taking it to a friends house to show off pictures of your latest trip.

Like many have said, do NOT forget to get a case for the Nano. They scratch very easily and nothing ruins the coolness factor than a bunch of scratches on your new player. I would also recommend getting the most memory available. The main purpose of these players is not only to be able to play your music on the go, but to also have the convenience of not having to lug around your CD's and player anytime you run around. Heck, I don't even use my car's 12-CD Changer anymore.

    Good Luck!
