My Sick Doggy

So I found out today that my dog has pancreatitis. Apparently his pancreas is inflammed and irritated by something he ate that he shouldn't have. The vet and I think it was probably caused by him eating some of the polyfil that is inside stuffed animals. He was throwing up alot and very lathargic so I decided to take him in today. He's probably going to be there for a couple days just to make sure he's ok. I'm dreading the vet bill, but he is definately worth it.

sorry about your dog. :( my pup eats all kinds of polyfill. hell, she eats any and everything. plastic toys, you name it. had to take all toys away from her. just got her spayed. now she resembles something to intercept signals from directv or dish network.

Gorgeous Golden you have there! Just keep thinking positive and things will be just fine.

Our dog Katie (11yr old) almost died two years ago. My 2 brothers and I moved away the last few years for school, but we still consider her ours. My father came home from work around midnight and as usual, Katie, a Cairn Terrier (Toto off the Wizard of Oz) was crazy as usual to see him. She was doing circles for my Mom to open the door and going crazy when she did open it. The next morning Katie couldn't stand up or have the energy to even eat. My parents thought maybe she got into something and waited a day before taking her to the vet. They did bloodwork at the vet (renowned vet of showdogs) and he said her red blood cell count was VERY low, to wait two days and see what happens. Us three brothers all drove home to see Katie the day of the vet visit and after more testing and bloodwork, the vet sent her home with us to die. She had some death sentence disease that caused her red blood cell count to deplete to almost 0.

After getting her home my Mom basically said let's let her go. I know a lot of people say this but I truly mean it, Katie is not your average dog. Every one of our close friends and family love this dog and constantly tell other people stories about her. She is truly a unique animal..actually, she's almost human...Well, knowing Katie is a fighter and not one to put up with any sort of **** (we could tell she was PISSED to be so sick) my brothers and I decided to rally along side her, pray our asses off, get food in her stomache, and boost her spirits. We went down to the grocery store and bought a bunch of baby food, along with yogurt and "baby water", the kind that has nutrients in it. I grabbed one of my Mom's syringes (she's an RN), mixed some of the special water stuff with some baby food, had my brothers hold Katie and force her mouth open. She did NOT want to eat, but we made her. We made her a pen in the kitchen with plastic on the ground, due to her puking 75% of what we fed her, and because she couldn't hold her urine. We took off work and stayed by her side for four days, all of which, she didn't have a single bowel movement. On the fifth day (man, I'm in tears writing this), as I was sleeping by her side in the pen, I was awoken by the sounds of a dog walking slowing on plastic. Holy ****, you have no idea the excitement that went over me that moment! We called the vet up and told him the good news, and needless to say, he was shocked. We continued the manual feeding for one more day and took her back the next day for more bloodwork. After getting the results, the vet came back into the exam room with a look on his face that I'll never forget. He was in utter disbelief. He said it was truly a miracle that she pulled through. On the bad side, about 3 weeks after she got another episode, and our parents failed to call us, not wanting to upset us. We were literally crying for almost 5 days straight. Well, good thing is this episode only lasted 2 days and ever since she's been in extremely good health.

Last month my Mom took Katie to the vet to get a full physical with bloodwork and the vet (a cheaper one, because the specialist was $$$$$) didn't believe my Mom when she told her Katie was 11.5 years old. She said her results and demeanor are better than most dogs three years old. With that, I hope Katie has at least five more years in her!

Sorry to jump into your thread, but I thought maybe sharing this *long* story would help keep your spirits up, because no matter how bad it may seem, there is light at the end of the tunnel. :)

Nice story Maz. Glad to hear your doggy made it through OK.

I just got a call from the vet and she said he was doing much better. They gave him anti inflammatory meds, antibiotics and kept him hydrated with an IV. She said he ate like crazy this morning, so if he doesn't puke it up by 3, then he can come home. He wasn't eating yesterday and didn't want anything to do with food until after he got the IV of fluid. Hopefully all will be well and he will be back in my bed by this afternoon :)

Glad to hear all is well.

We lucked out, Willow doesn't eat anything. The only thing she does is chew the hair of tennis balls and teddy bears and spits it out all over the house. So she is not allowed those toys.

My wife asked me a good question a couple weeks back" How much would you spend if willow got sick or hurt?" My answer was, I don't know! I would have to evaluate the situation. To this day I still can't provide a answer.

Haven't had to "help" with polyfill. But, baby wipes pose a challenge. It's odd that they can make it all the way except for that last little bit.

    Get well soon, pooch.

Sorry to hear about that, scubamike :(

A very close friend of mine had to put their mastiff to sleep recently. His arthritis was so bad he could barely walk. Talk about a gentle giant. Anytime I would go over there to visit he would cuddle up with their two cats. It's not every day you see a 190 lb. canine snuggling with cats.

My mastiff and my rotty both love my two cats. People think of these large dogs as being killers but mine would let the cats eat with them and let any kid crawl all over them without thinking twice. Hooch will definitely be missed by me and my whole family. Couldnt belive the phone calls after my brother in law found out about the death the phone didnt stop ringing for hours.

He's all better now!!!! I have him on a special prescription dog food and amoxicillin to prevent any infections. They also have him some stuff to flush out his system so he drinks tons of water and pee's gallons. Oh well. He's back to his normal perky happy self :) I'm very glad I took him to the vet and didn't write it off as regular dog puking.
