Monitor10~ 6-1/2" driver discoloration, + tweeter question

Hi,

Picked up a pair of series 2 monitor 10s recently from ebay. They hopefully just need some easy repairs, but just want to make sure that I'm not missing anything serious, because I still have the option of retuning the things (but I hear such good reviews).

1) Tweeters will need to be replaced. One seems to have had the dome un-pushed-in by poking a pin in it a couple of times. The other is dead.
On the speaker with the dead tweeter, it seems the mid-bass drivers sound a bit distorted. I'll swap the tweeters to check and see if this happens vice-versa, but just wondering if this is normal, I have a gut feeling it is...

2) On the pair, 3 out of 4 drivers have a "white ring" discoloration on the caps covering the voice coils of the mid-bass drivers. Normal? I first thought it looked like a salty residue, or glue residue (like plastic solvents), but now have no idea. The drivers otherwise seem in decent condition, but should test individually.

Peeking inside the cabinets, the crossovers seem clean, and there appears to be no structural damage. Just a lot of that drippy glue covering all the seams.

If anyone has any easy answers, they would be greatly appreciated. I have severe rheumatoid arthritis (got it at 25, and I'm still kinda young at only 32) so hauling these monsters and pulling out parts is an adventure in pain I'd like to avoid.

Spent the last of my life savings on them, wondering if it worth all the work or should just return them (also a lot of work). Good speakers are hard to find... and if these are good I'd want to keep them.

The white rings around the dust caps are nothing to worry about. Get the repalcement tweeters from Polk. Remember to tell them you're a CP member and you'll get them for $48 ea and free shipping, too. If that driver is bad, order the repalcement at the same time. Good luck with the 10s and enjoy.

    White ring removal...

    1) Q-Tips
    2) Windex

How? Spray windex on the tips of the Q-Tips.... then lightly* wipe the white residue away.

The residue is nothing more than oxidized glue.

    Hi,

    Thanks!

A big load off of my mind. Will try and finish testing all of the parts today, and after getting the new tweeters will hopefully have a happy smile on my face.

    Thanks again.

    Modvlar,
Easiest way to check the mid-woofers (MW's) is to gently push in the passive radiator (PR). The MW's should smoothly move outward and not make a sound. If one or both stick or make a scratchy noise, they have issues.

From your posts in the other Mon 10 thread, we know you paid near top dollar for your 10's. While MW damage can occur in shipping, and is an insurance issue, same is not true for the tweeter condition you mention. Be sure the seller is aware of your disappointment.

    Hi again,

Yup, did the mid-woofer test. No noises. Was one of the big concerns on my mind regarding shipping, since I did hear that they are somewhat delicate and can go out of whack. Also figured out one of the MWs was replaced (the 3 out of 4 discolored issue) but was replaced with an original polk part.

The person who sold me the speakers has been quite responsive to the problem; no hassles. Said he would cover the cost of replaceing the tweeters, with a possible bit extra for all of the trouble. So my mood is a bit happier now.

Now to just wait for the tweeters to come into stock (in Canada)... guess I can fill my time finding a way to replace the cloth on the grills. Could be a fun time-waster.

Wish I could have done this all over... But if they sound wonderful after I get the tweeters, then no big loss.

Glad to read that the seller is being cooperative... most are.
