the carvers, and why I'm going to kill a cat!

so I'm hooking up my SDA 1B's for a demo, right in from of the Carver Amazings when I smell cat pee!! then I see a moist spot on the bottom right corner of the carver's grill (rt channel). I smell it, and to my horror, cat pee.......f%cking CAT PEE!!!! I wondering how the hell she did it, I figured she had to actually hang on the grill. so I popped the grill cover and to my horror, I find the foam of 3 of the drivers shredded. I mean the foam was delicate due to age, but the cat did NOT have to help it along!

so I pop the other grill, I say to my wife, hold the grill so it doesnt slide down while I take the last screw out.....well..she doesnt. it slides straight down, and rips the surrounds of 2 more drivers. I didnt get too mad at the wife, since I touched the foam and it tore, so a replacement was in short order anyway.

so I freak about the whole cat thing in general, the cat in question has been banned from my floor of the house (my sister in law lives upstairs) and all access via cat to the basement has been closed off. I cant kill the cat, the juice isnt worth the squeeze because I'll have 2 crying women in the house. But the warning has been given, if I see that cat in the basement or near my stuff, out it goes!!!

I called Dynavox.com and 10 replacement drivers are on the way (8 replacements and 2 spares). with shipping and COD its 308.00.

I was debating swapping the drivers anyway, because I knew the foam was on the way out, but the grill cloth smelling like cat pee is a nice touch!!!! thank god, this hapenned no where near the ribbons.

had to get this off my chest
sorry for the rant.

    Lou,

I don't know what it is about pets and audio that clash but there you have it.

Actually, the cat MAY have done you a favor in that the woofs were probably not long for this world anyway AND you still get to blame the cat.

I'd go ahead and replace the grill cloths, you will never get that smell out.

yeah, i thought about that. the foam was intact, but dried out and weak looking. I guess this was the nudge I needed to just order replacements.

oddly enough, the grill cloth on that side was in rough shape too, so ces la vie.

I'm guessing there were some claw marks in the grill cloth as well, unless your cat lifts a leg...

Invisible fence around the system would work great....especially if you get some real voltage thru that shock collar.

I think it would be wise to have some type of foldable wall or some such to go around your system when you arnt listening to it... - something the cat can mess up just in case...

I cant get rid of the cats, my wife and wife's sister would cry non stop. blocking the basement door should do the job. In regards to the nature's miracle, I've used it and completly forgot about it. its worth a shot. Thanks for the reminder Jesse.

the drivers are suppossed to be shiped out today, so all shall be well. in the meantime I'm getting reaquainted with the SDA 1B's. I forgot how great they are. what a soundstage! Person who was supossed to pick them up never came, maybe god's trying to tell me something :) Of course, I am going to need money now that I have this added expence of buying replacement drivers.

Uhhh...I would tell your sister in law to take the cat to the vet. The reason is two fold. Number one, cats can regrow the parts needed to spray scent. The glands don't grow back but the urine still flies like the dickens. Scent and urine are two parts of how the cat marks territory. That's why it smells like urine and not the typical urine/musk smell of a marked spot. I doubt the cat climbed the speaker grill. Also, cats will do this kind of thing when they have kidney stones. They can get kidney stones from a number of things. Anything from an infected cut to cheap cat food can give them kidney stones. This condition will exacerbate any issues you might have with the cat marking territory. Either way, tell your sister in law to get the cat checked out by a vet or the cat will start pissing all over alot of other stuff too.

The reason I know this is because my parent's cat had the same problem and she destroyed a 100 year old upright piano with the spraying.

you can buy stuff called Petzyme, it works great when ever Willow is sick.
I say for the time, buy some very sticky 2 way tape and lay it in a square around your speakers, the cat will walk on it once or twice and will never go in that direction again.

Did you buy the speakers recently? used? if so the person before may have had a cat and your cat may have just been doing what is knows to do, mark it's scent.

Good luck and remember it's just a cat, I know it pisses you off (pardon the punn) but it is after all an animal with a brain the size of a tuna can.

As per Jstas: he is right my cat had stones and would pee everywhere. UNtil we got the stones removed, which is mucho $$ and can come back in no time. No I do beleive male cats are either the only ones who can get stones or are more likely to.

I actually had a cat with this problem (Earl) had a big problem with the stones and peed in different places (resolved with meds, thank god!).it was har to miss because his pee smelled like amonia straight from the friggin bottle!
Punkin (the offending cat) was checked and all is good. thing is, my sister in law got another cat (yep, number 4!!!) and I think punkin is jealous. trust me on this, its spite, not the infection. this has been a recurring issue, where this cat will hit my sisters cloths and bed, because that is where the other cat sleeps. I should have known there was something about my 2 channel rig that irked her, because she did pee on my surge protector on the 2 channel about 4 months ago. I should have barred the basement at that time but didnt. Oddly enough, her pee isnt nearly as pungent as other cats, which is why you really dont smell it until you are very near it. in this case, while I was hooking up the 1B's for demo.

maybe I'll get the cat checked again just in case

it runs strong with males genetically, but its not exclusive. my cat earl and his littermate (mother in law;s cat), both males and had the same problem. thelittermate needed surgery though since it blossommed into a full blown blockage.

If there is a new cat then that is the problem. the offending cat is just laying down the rules for the new cat so the new cat knows what's up. If you had the cat checked recently, there isn't much reason to blow more money on the cat. I'd just lock the cat away from the high dollar equipment. That's what I did. The cat gets pissed that he can't get in but oh well. The cat will eventually learn that when he can beat me, he can have the run of the house.
