Hi,

Im new to HT, am nearly ready to buy a system but not quite sure on a few of the speakers, I will be useing this setup mostly for HT and somtimes music.

What would be the batter choice out of
RTi8 or Monitor 70? the Monitor is only a little bit more expensive, the monitor only seems to have a little more base?

RTi4 or RTi6? the guy at the shop recomended the 4

FXi5 or FXi3 the guy recomended 3

CSi3 or CSi5 the guy recomended 3

and am looking at the PSW404 sub?

He recomended the Denon AVR2106S receiver, another shop has a
Onkyo TX-SR702 for only a little more, would that be a better choice?

Room is 14 by 21ft

Thanks for your help.

    Hi Daz welcome!

I agree with Millerman about the setup.

The only change I would make is I would drop the RTI 6 & look at getting a sub from SVS, or Outlaw, or HSU.

Polk is not known for making the greatest subs.

    Thanks for your replies.

Mostly for HT but sometimes music, my budget is about $5000NZD that’s about 3500USD, here in NZ I can get the RTi8, RTi4, CSi3, AVR2106S, PSW404 and FXi3 for $4350NZD so leaves me with a little extra to spend.

What is the advantage of having the bigger backs, surrounds and front?
will it sound any better or just be louder?

Also why do you guys recommend the Denon over the Onkyo?

I am looking into different subs but we cant get SVS here in New Zealand.

    Thanks again for the help

For the sub, you can do better than the PSW404. Get a velodyne instead.

Look at the CHT-R subs, should match up with the 404 price wise (they do here).

what are you guys thoughts on the CHTR12 velodyne sub?

A very good sub. Very clean from 25hz. Will go down to 20 hz with high SPL with some distortion. It's designed to give you very good HT and great musicality. If it's the same price as the 404 and you can't get SVS, go for it.

BTW in the States it's the DLS4000R.

    Thanks Ron,

I was wondering why I couldnt find anything about it on the forum, its about 40% more than the 404, I have no problem paying that much more if it will sound better, what about the CHTR15 (DLS5000R), will it go lower and louder?

Just had a look on Velodyne website, it seems the CHT comes with a remote but the DLS doesnt...

    Thanks

The DLS and CHT-R subs are the same...just different model numbers for exports. The 15 is a big sub with tons of power. Very good down to 20hz then rolls off. Very high output. I've seen one, but haven't heard it. I think there are a couple of guys around here that have one.

They all have remotes and 4 preset EQs.

Not to muddy the waters, but if you have not auditioned the RTi10 for your mains, do so. To my ears it's the best thing in the RTi line.

I was thinking about the RTi10 but most people on the forums say they dont have enough mid range, and the 8's sound better when setup with a sub.

I was also looking in the RTi12 but I dont really want to buy a bigger amp to run them.

I did music only auditions and found the 12's were too boomy for my taste and the 8's too thin, but they were not paired with a sub.

As for the 8's blending better with a sub... that makes no sense to me, but then again, it was not part of my audition.

    Bottom Line
Ears differ... What with you being in NZ and all, is auditioning these 3 yourself an option? If yes, do so. Your pair of ears are the only ones that matter.

Yes we have the full line of polk here in NZ, I have listened to the RTi8. RTi12 , LSi15 and Monitor 70 only, I will give the RTi10 a go.

Why do you guys not recommend the monitor 70?

The Monitors are Polk's entry level series, the RTI's the mid level & LSI's their top of the line. If you can afford to go to the mid or top that is probably the best. The sound will be better all the way around.

Yup... Components in the LSi and RTi lines are better quality.

Don't get us wrong though... it's not that the Monitor series doesn't sound good, it does. Compared to the RTi's and LSi's, I thought the Mon's were brighter. And while I tend to like bright speakers the Mon's got edgey on some material. Russman owned a version of the Mon 60 called the T90EB ,and thought the tweeters settled down considerably after break in, and when paired with the right electronics was quite listenable.

Of the Monitors the 60 was my fav. I thought the 70's bass was a bit bloated (similar to my RTi 10 vs. 12 experience).

Again though, it's your ears that matter...

I'm currently running a Sony STR-DA4ES recceiver, Polk RTi 6 for my front L/R mains, RTi 4 for surrounds, CSi 3 center and a PSW-404 rounds it all off. I'm always learning something new about my system and ways to make it sound its best. Recently I found that after fiddling with the LFE mix level, turning off the dynamic range compression, and then recalibrating all the speaker levels, it's like my sub woke up from a two year nap! And that's Polk's PSW-404! I can only imagine what it will be like when I get my SVS PB-10.
Bottom line is, I, at one time, was very intersted in tower speakers. Particularly, the RTi 8. Given the size of my room and the fact that I can't seem to justify having large speakers set to "small", The RTi 6 combined with a decent sub makes for an asthetically pleasing package that, for now, provides musical pleasure with movie excitement.

Make a new thread Max.... you dont want to derail Daz's thread here. Btw, welcome!

    Daz,

I really like the 10s over the 8s. But the 8s are very good in their own right. If you can, try to listen to the 10s and make up your mind from there. 8s over 70s for sure btw.
