Good Luck William, I will be interested in hearing your review. I a really beginning to question those CDP companies that try to cover the gamut between low cost and high-end. You probably have engineers on one hand who want to do the right thing and bean counters on another trying to squeeze every last buck out of a unit. Generalized a bit here, but I am beginning to lean towards those companies who focus on only building quality sources. I see the 640 getting some good reviews, but like you say what good is it even if it sounds good if it wont handle a store bought CD. Well maybe you'll have better luck.

Yeah reeltrouble 1, actually i have enough gear around here to open up a used audio shop. i heard good things about the Cambridge Audio CD players and i wanted a new toy to mess with while my Symphonic Line Vibrato CD player is getting factory upgraded with the new MK II 24 bit mods.if the 640 C is a disapointment i will probably never mess with Audio Advisor or any more inexpensive mass market gear again.thanks....WCW III

    WCW,

I dont necessarily think of Cambridge as mass market, but suppose it could be thought of that way. But as your experience with the Cambridge lower end unit was not a good one, I wonder about the build of the 640. My two major goals for 06 are to improve my source and pre in the 2ch rig. I thought I had a something working on a MF tri-vista but that seems to have fizzled.

Anyway, will look for your impressions of the 640 and the upgraded Symphonic upon its return to you.

the bad part is that the D500 SE was the best player that Cambridge Audio built prior to the release the newer improved Azur series. i bought a demo unit and some others on this forum either own or have owned the D500 SE without encountering the problem that the one that i bought developed so who knows ?the Cambridge 640c uses the same Wolfson 24 bit DAC as the Arcam CD 73 T and is supposed to sound very good for the money so i will just keep my fingers crossed.the Symphonic Line CDP is a $5000,00 player and sounds organic like a good turntable does. i am getting it modded because they came out with the MK 2 version this year and i want to keep it up to date. i will let you know how the 640c sounds after i let it settle in for a week or so after i get it. thanks....WCW III

Still like my Jolida. Overall build quality is very good. If there is a negative point I'd say only the transport is a bit 'plastic' compaired to the rest of the heavy aluminum face and 3lbs remote. It does what it needs to do but it seem odd to have such a HD remote and such a light weight CD loading tray. Oh yea it has tubes too ;) Sound wise it keeps getting better. Many cd's I'd given up as junk are now very listenable.
