cdp suggestions

Currently im using my computer as my main source, so its time to upgrade to a cdp on the cheaper side (ie $150 or less). It doesnt need to be sacd/dvd-a compatable, but of course it would be a plus. Ive havent really looked at cd players since ive been able to appreciate what the insides can really mean. Use to just pick based on cheapest name brand one i could find. So now i have no idea really what to look for and was hoping you guys would have some suggestions. Thanks

    If you want a good universal player look at Pioneer DV-588A
    Price List
    I had a previous year model and its not at all bad for the price.
    It plays MP3 on DVDs & DivX as well.
    There are many cheap player in your price range but I think its the most bang for buck as it plays SACD/DVD-A/DivX/Mp3/WMA.

    +1 for the Pioneer DV-588A. I have one, it's a great player for the money. $129.

    Why would one even mention 'Divx'?

    Find a entry level Marantz, AMC, or Cambridge - you can get very close to your pricepoint, and the difference in redbook performance will be better than some new, cheapie with a lot of bells and whistles.

    Get one with a Coax dig output, and you can add an external DAC later, to keep up ANOTHER notch.

    +1 what RuSs said.

    Cambridge, Rotel, Onix, Musical Fidelity, NAD, AMC and even the Denon will give you much better preformance than a universal player. I've owned (2) Pioneer DVD players and the audio performance is abysmal and I'm assuming the same for the DV-588A. Essentially a computer drive with very cheap components and poor design inside. Unless your prepared to spend some money on the Elite line stay away from Pioneer if you are concerned about SQ. At your price point look used to get the best bang for your buck. This is just IMO and your mileage may vary.

    there is a marantz cd5000 for $60 on audiogon. Just wondering what people thought of this. Seems cheap enough that it would be hard to not be worth the money.

    There is also an amc cd8b on ebay, still a day left, but its at 82 bucks. Provided the price doesnt run up a lot in the last hours, is the amc better?
