If you need to take your music mobile, I love 'em. I wouldn't rate the SQ on the same level with a decent CDP though.

I'm seriously considering the 60gb model for my car and road trips. I don't think, however, that it'd ever take the place of a CDP.George Grand wrote: »

Check with Okie about this thread. He has a buddy that has one NIB (if he still has it.) And, I think an iPod is a lot more useful than a Walkman CDP.

The Ipods are sweet, no doubt. But if you want higher sound quality, I would consider something from creative. The Zen Vision goes for 399.99US or less. The creative products generally have a better signal to noise ratio for their headphone jacks. Also the headphones will make a big difference in SQ, a good pair of earbuds like the sennheiser MX500 would do nicely.
Another note on the creative, it isn't as sleek as the ipod, but it does have a 640x480 screen and cf card slot.My HT/Music System:

I have a Creative Zen 40GB model that I've had for a year or so and I like everything about it other than the size. I've considered getting the Ipod because of the smaller size, but I've heard a few negatives about them:
1. Batteries are not changeable by you. If your battery craps out, you HAVE to send it to Apple to replace for a fee.
2. Won't play WMA files. Don't know if you have many of those, but the fact that it won't sucks **** IMO.
3. Class action suit on their battery issues. Don't remember the specifics, but it had something to do with the above mentioned problem and them intentionally selling them with sub-par batteries......comment comment comment comment. bitchy. -
I currently own the 60gb Video Ipod. Bought it recently and so far it has traveled with me to both Washington D.C. and Denver, Colorado. During the trips I throughly enjoyed the video screens.
Mine currently has the entire first season of Lost, Lethal Weapon 1, LW2, LW3, and LW4 on it, Young Guns 1 and YG2, and over 1800 songs. I am only using up 11gp of the space available. Truly amazing.
The battery life is advertised around 20hours. This may be true for purely music listening with the bright color screen off but for video watching, it is more around 4.5 hours.
I agree that there are many more mpeg players that are smaller, but for my purposes (lots of trips), this is much more compact than a DVD player and allows me to carry it anywhere.
The big price I have found on this item will be doubled in accessories. Currently I have a docking station that broadcasts in FM in my car, apple docking station with remote hooked up to my HT for watching movies and listening to my music (LOST is much better on my HT screen when possible), docking station with speakers (i.e. some old computer speakers I had) hooked up at the office.
The reasons I bought this particular one is that I wanted to be able to watch my DVDs in a compact fashion, have enough room for ALL my CD's, and be able to get the accessories I needed (Ipod accessories are staggering in number). I am very pleased with mine.Holydoc (Home Theatre Lover)

Apple did have a battery issue. It cost $99 to replace the battery after a few years but you can get it replaced for about $50 now as I understand it.
As for WMA files. Everything can be converted but I have a lot of mp3's but I love the Apple format. When I do an mp3 and a CD I can really notice a big big difference in audio quality especially if you play the same song as an mp3 then a CD. The apple format seems like CD quality. Dunno if it is but it seem as though it is. That's why it was developed. I even have a shuffle that I like too.
It seems so funny plugging my shuffle into my system. A stick of gum sized player with music coming out of my SDA2's
Anyway, I don't think Apple's done yet. Steve Jobs is one of those that comes at you out of left field. Wonder what's next?
