Just picked up a new pair of Energy Reference Connoisseur RC-10s The store I used to work at just started carrying them a couple months ago, and curiousity got the best of me. So I stopped in and bought a pair from a buddy that still works there (CP member Fireshoes).

I have had Energy speakers in the past and was always impressed with them for the money. When I first heard that the store had started carrying these I looked up the details on Energy's website. First thing I noticed was that the bookshelf model had approximately the same frequency response as the LSi9s I am currently using. This really peaked my interest since I tend to prefer the sound of monitors over floorstanders for 2ch listening, but don't like to sacrifice too much on the low end. When I first stopped at the store to look at them I was really taken back by their small size. They are only slightly larger than RTi4s. As soon as I saw them I was convinced that I had mis-read the stats.

Well it has been a few weeks since that visit, and I have decided to put my doubts to the test. I just set them up about an hour ago and already I am having to occasionally pick my jaw up off the floor. The punch these little guys have is breathtaking. Mids and Highs are nicely pronounced and detailed, but side slightly toward the bright side. I assume this trait will go away after a good break in. Now like I said it has only been an hour so far, and energy claims you should give them a solid 100 hours before getting optimal performance. So only time will tell. But anyway I was just so impressed that I had to post about them. I will post a more detailed review after a full break-in.

To anyone who has the opportunity to audition these I would highly recommend it.

Later ;)

Well sort of. I have them in place of my 9's right now. Honestly I bought them fully intending just to audition them and return them. I really didn't think I would like them enough to keep them. I mean how often are you likely to find a speaker at half the price that you like as much? But now I have a feeling when I return these I will be forced to order a set in a different finish. Well I'll just have to see how it goes. Still got about 85 hours of break-in to go.

    Quick Update:

Ok it's been about 60 hours of play time. I'm still loving these little guys. Side to side imaging is great. Depth is lacking slightly, but this is a problem I also suffer with the 9s. I'm sure this is due to having to place them too close to the wall. Bass response is still outstanding for such a small speaker. As expected lows have become cleaner and tighter with time. Mids and highs are also more mellow now. Still more forward than the 9's, but in my opinion not harsh in any way. So far I have found these to be a little more engaging and energetic.

I'm waiting just a little longer before doing extensive side by side comparisons with the Lsi9s.

    Stay tuned. :)

I'm a little delayed due to a failed tube in my amp. I just replaced it recently and am waiting to get it fully broken in again.

But thanks for sticking with me.;)
