All you NAD lovers! Is this a good deal?

I'm looking for a stereo receiver for our bedroom setup and a guy I know locally has a NAD 705 stereo receiver he offered to sell me, in mint condition, for $100. The only problem is I'm reading a lot of negative reviews about it regarding needing the bulb replaced:

I was also hoping to get a receiver that has a sub out with adjustable crossover. I'm going to be using 3" fullrange Hi-Vi B3N speakers with a powered 8" sub and I'd like to cross the 3" over at 100-150hz, but with the NAD that's not possible.

Thanks for any input.

    Maz,

I like the NAD gear and have had zero issues with the pre's and amps I have. Excellent build quality. I dont have a 705 so cant talk about that particular unit. If hes a friend maybe he will let you try it out? 100 bucks seems like a steal deal to me for just about any of their gear.

Could you not just run the speaker wire to the sub let its crossover filter at 100hz or so then go back out from the sub to the speakers? Just a thought.

Sounds like you're aiming for the bose sound :)

Anyhow, you don't need to cross over the B3N's- their natural rolloff will take care of that... just play around with the phase and crossover on the sub to blend it in...

Does that have a preout/power in loop? Your other option would be to put in a pseudo-active fmod on the loop. They run about $30.

$80 COD...mint is mint, regardless of whether you have a use for it.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

My experience is that NAD while very good. their only downfall is the bulbs burn out prematurely. that's been the case with the NAD gear that i've owned. otherwise the NAD seperates i've used have been very well made and sound great. what year is that NAD from?

If the only thing wrong with it is a burned out bulb.. it's not a reason to turn it down. but i'm not familiar with that NAD receiver. Will he let you demo it in your home before you decide to buy it?

These are FAR from Bose speakers. They even took the crown this year at the 2005 Dayton DiY event for best midrange and best imaging:

The problem with these, as Zaph points out in his project, is their bass distortion if not crossed over actively. I would put a cap in series with them to kill some bass, but due to their impedance peak, you can't do this. Using the filter built in to some plate amps will yield the same result, since all those use is a capacitor anyways.

Doro, what did you mean by $80 COD? Do you think I should offer him $80 for it? I would, but Paul is a stellar guy and I know $100 is fair for this piece, seeing how the last one just sold on Ebay for $150 + $30 shipping. He did say he would throw in 3 brand new bulbs and if I ever needed them replaced he would do it for me free of charge. He lives right down the road so I know he's good for it. If he goes back on his word, I'll just burn his house down. That's all :D

The thing I'm debating is whether or not to just get a Panny XR25 digital receiver off Ebay, which usually sell for about $110, and I know that has an active sub crossover because I already own two of them. Just nailing a mint NAD for $100 is VERY tempting.

Oh, the guy bought this new 10 years ago and still has the box, manual, and remote. Model year is 1993. Here's a pic of one I got off Google:

    Thanks for all the replies!

Oh, I totally agree, those little things are awesome (from everything I hear)- I was refering to the 150hz crossover :)

Anyhow, has anyone tried putting a zobel network on them? Or load it in a TL or ported enclosure to tame the impedence?... TL would be about 40", but you could fold it a few times...
