Abrams M1A2 tank

I was just watching the Discovery Channel during supper, and they were talking about the Abrams M1A2 tank. Since I was multi-tasking (listening, eating, and sweating...it was Wendy's Spicy Chicken Sandwich ), I'm not sure if I remember everything, but here are some of the facts that I remember.
Each Abrams M1A2 costs the government 4.5 million dollars. The way this was stated (and since I was multi-tasking, lol), I'm not sure if this included any kind of maintenance or if this was strictly the cost to build one.
They didn't say what kind of engine it has or what kind of torque it makes (I'd like to see that figure! ), it puts out 1500hp. That 1500hp 'rockets' the tank from 0 to 20 mph in 7 seconds flat.
The tank tops out at about 50mph, though I had previously heard it could do 70. Maybe that was another variant.
The Abrams M1A2 rolls on 2 20-foot long tracks that are 2-feet wide and weigh 6,000lbs (each) - or as much as a Chevrolet Suburban!
I forgot how much they said the tank weighs, but they said it is equivalent to 3 tractor trailer rigs (seems like maybe they said 90 tons).
The main turret gun on the tank launches a 120mm round (that's big! and the biggest we (America) have) at 800 feet per second (or twice the speed of sound  ) accurately up to 3 miles away!
That's about all I can remember, but I thought it was pretty impressive.

You won't know the exact specs of the vehicle unless you have a need-to-know. Performance limits in all aspects are usually confidential if not classified. You can rest assured that the tank can better the performance numbers of what was posted. Then again, it doesn't have to. The M1A2 Abrams is capable of firing at a target that it can see. Only problem is that the Abrams' target can't see the Abrams. That is lethal strike capability. The tank don't have to run fast if it can annihilate it's target. No enemy left means nothing to run away from.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

That is an impressive tank. I was told that the U.S never releases full specs on their defense equipment. A published (or released) 50mph spec is most likely not the fastest it can go.Receiver: harmankardon AVR235

I may have seen something similar on tv about those tanks and it is fascinating to watch. How the gun barell can stay level and shoot long distances while moving full speed ahead is cool. They showed once they were shooting the enemy tanks sight unseen and the enemy guys were running/leaving their tanks because of the precision at which an Abrams could shoot.Denon #2900, Denon stereo receiver, Conrad Johnson Sonographe 120 amp, Blue Jeans cables, and Klipsch RF-7's

50 MPH is typically the governed speed under most conditions. The engine is closer to a jet turbine than a cars. Additionally, the abrams has numerous variants that range from 65 tons and upto 90 tons (Typ 68-70) so accelleration and top speeds are going to vary. The "heavy" tank uses a skirt of depleted uranium as an additional armor barrier.

They don't cover the depleted uranium config, but most of the other varients are discussed. There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin -
I've actually got to ride in one....talk about a COOL ride.
We shipped a bunch of them out of Hunter Army Airfield back in '93 to Mogadishu. For airshipment the fuel level has to be below a certain level so they had to burn off some gas so they ran them around the airfield and let us rid in them.
They weigh around 60-70 tons depending on the edition. A REAL pain in the **** to tie down on a C5
