HELP: SDA 1B Crossover

Today I stayed home, sick (damn flu), and since was all alone I decided to "enjoy" my new setup. (enjoy = play at volumes that are not allowed when someone else is in the house :)).

A couple of things to say:

1.- WOW; never thought this could sound so good so loud; I am SOOOOOO happy with my system..

2.- My 1B's tweeters are going in protection..this only happens with music with a lot of highs and loud...I reduce volume and in a few seconds the tweeters are back.

So... I guess I need to replace the polyswitchs; and if I'm doing that, I might as well rebuild the whole crossovers.

I made a search and could not find any thread mentioning crossover upgrades for the 1B's; I also noticed in the vintage parts list that there is no part number for this crossover...
Has anyone rebuilt or upgraded the crossover for a 1B? I can always ask Ken for a parts list, or get them out and just replace whatever is there...but I want to ask first here..

Thanks!!

Ricardo.

Bad news - your poly switches sound like they are doing exactly what they are supposed to. Sounds like you need a new amp. (then again - who am I to stand in the way of a crossover mod...)

Seriously - sounds like you are sending your amp into clipping and that is what is activating your polyswitchs. That is why they are there. Get a bigger amp or turn it down are about your only reasonable options....

    Mains.............Polk LSi15 (Cherry)

Surrounds.......Polk LSi7 (Gloss Black - wood sides removed and crossovers upgraded)
    Subwoofers.....SVS 25-31 CS+ and PC+ (both 20hz tune)
    Pre\Pro...........NAD T163 (Modded with LM4562 opamps)

I did think this could be the reason, but I tend to conclude it is not...because volume was not THAT high; after it happened the first time, I did a little testing and the tweeters went off at 11 o'clock with music from Heart (a lot of highs); I was able to listen to a lot of other music at higher volumes and tweeters were ok all the time.

Anyway..you might be right, but a new amp is not in the horizon for now....so my only option now is the crossovers :)

Well, document all the crossover mods you do (with pictures) cuz I have a set of 1b's as well and have been thinking of doing a similar mod. Any help you can provide would be much appreciated.... :)

I will happily document everything, pics included; just need some help with the parts; already emailed Ken, and I hope he can give me a list. These would be the "rebuild" parts (back to original); I was wondering if anyone would have an "upgrade" list..... but seems the 1B's are not so popular?? There are plenty of crossover threads for other models....nothing for the 1B's.

Anyway; if no one comes up with something I'll just "rebuild"; for sure it will not hurt :)

Hmmm...no luck so far...and have not heard from Ken either...

So...I was thinking....would it be a good idea to replace the 1B crossovers with the upgraded 1C's? At the end, they are basically the same speakers, right? Probably the 1C's had improved crossovers on top of the cabinet changes?

    Any thoughts??

If you call Polk Customer Service they will send you the schematic for the 1b. That will at least tell you what you have to replace. I do not know if they still stock the Crossovers for the SDA speakers though....

    Hi HT -

I am very interested in what you determine about the upgrade. You're right, the 1B's don't seem to garner much respect here. Usually it's all about the 1c's.

As far as documenting the upgrade, maybe that would be a candidate for the "reference" threads that Doro has been creating lately....

    Good luck with everything.

I already called Customer Service and they will mail me the diagram with parts for the 1B.

I am still not quite convinced that get the crossovers back to original is what I want to do; it is my understanding that as part of the development going from 1A to 1B to 1C, crossover improvements were made; the 1C's and 1B's are basically the same speakers...on top of the cabinet changes they did have different drivers, but also the crossovers were changed. I am thinking that if I put a 1C crossover in my 1B's I should have some benefits...but what do I know...

Where are all those SDA Gurus now?????

Anyway, whatever I do, I will document :)
