CRS loss of highs. Crossover Problem??

Help!

I (finally) got my NAD 218 amp (200+ wts/cnl) back from repair shop for an intermittent problem and fired it up with my recently installed CRS+ speakers (with new tweeters and relocated to their "correct" location). When I really cranked up the volume, not to ear splitting levels but to "damn these sound great" levels, the highs all of a sudden dropped out. I turned the volume down to normal levels and the tweeters kicked back in but when I raised the volume up again same thing, they cut out. Unfortunately the other problem I had with the amp also came back this weekend (one channel will sporadically cut out) but I believe this to be a completely different (but still IRITATING) problem. Intermittent problems SUCK. They never act up at the repair shop!

Prior to hooking up the NAD I was using my vintage Dynaco amp (also 200 wts/chnl). I noticed a problem of tweeter "crackling" at high volumes also. I wasn't sure if it was power or speaker problems so I waited until the NAD came back to crank them up again.

So... does this sound like a crossover issue or an electronics issue. I'm guessing crossover since I assume the crossovers in the SDA's are pretty complicated. Be careful with terminology if you have thoughts on this since I don't know the names of most of the components.

Thanks for any help.

PS. For more background, I'm running the speakers with my vintage Sony TA 2000 pre-amp and then through the amp of my HSU subwoofer prior to the main amp. The subwoofer amp splits off the low end to the subwoofer and only lets the mids and highs through.

Thanks. Polyswitch, huh, punching that into the search engine turned up lots of threads of similar experiences. Without going through them all right now, any sense of the ease for the basicaly competent (hopefully not overstating my abilities) do-it-yourself fix? Is it an unplug/re-plug item or a snip and sodder issue?
