My wife caught this article on yahoo. Apparently sony has put software on some of their music cd that automatically installs on your computer (without you knowing) when you insert the disc. This was apparently done in an attempt to monitor the number of copies being made. However the BRAINS at sony decided to ignore warnings from security companies about the potential risks involved.

It pisses me off. I don't need extra virus software running around in my pc. If I were a business owner I would have to consider making a rule of "No music CD's are allowed to be played in company equipment". That just isn't right. Luckily my LP's are exempt. :)

As far as I'm concerned, thats illegal. Are there any warnings on the case? Anywhere? When I purchase a CD, I can make as many damn copies of that thing as I want to. So long as I only listen to one at a time, and don't distribute or sell the others, they need to keep their noses out of my damned business.

Intellectual property rights are going to continue to be an issue as more PC technogies emerge. I read an article yesterday that was about Google going to post "snippets" of everything from 3 college libraries. They would then sell ad space that would be utilized when a users reads a "snippet". All of this without compensating the authors. link

I agree that it is just DEAD WRONG to have something installed on YOUR machine without your knowledge. Pisses me off. Our machines are so locked down at work now that I can't get to the run command, change my screen resolution, or look at the properties under My Computer.

And when I buy something, when is it really mine?

This doesnt suprise me really. Sony used to be the **** and my alltime favorite electronics brand. When I wanted something I didnt even shop around much, just went straight for the Sonys. Now not only is their quality lacking but now theyre pulling crap like this?

Here's a interesting link about this BS, http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2005/10/sony-rootkits-and-digital-rights.html

DO NOT download Sony's Detection/Removal Tool.
