Hi. First time post. New to audio/video...but very addicting so far. Thank you in advance with asisting me.

Ok.. my question.

I have a Harman Kardon 525 Receiver I purchased a year ago. Here are the specs...

- 7.1 Home Theater Receiver
- 7 X 70 watts per channel
- 2 X 85 watts stereo mode
- Dolby Digital/Pro Logic II
- DTS 5.1/6.1/ES/Neo:6®

I just purchased the following and would like to know if the receiver will be enough to run them...

1) RTi10's (Floor Standing - Front speakers )
2) CSi5 (Center Channel)
3) FXi5's (Rear Surround)
4) No subwoofer yet, but I will eventually buy a powered Sub?

So, with this configuration, will the receiver be able to handle it all?

Thank you!

Since no sub is in the near plan, you will have to run your front speakers on large to get bass response. This will stretch the HK 525 some at loud theater levels. Once you get a sub, you can set all channels to the small setting and relieve your receiver from having to handle the bass through its amps. With a stout powered sub, you will have a nice HT setup.

Why on earth, under ANY circumstance would you want to set the RTi10's to small?

That's why they sell the RTi4/6.

Hopefully you have preouts on the HK, get a man-amp for at LEAST the 10's, and figure out the sub later.

The bass units in the 10's are rated to 35Hz 3db down, 20Hz 10db down. They are low passed at 125Hz, 2nd order. The mid drivers pick it up there, high passed at 125Hz.

Complete waste of a full range speaker, in 'small' - see quote above for a more viable option for a 'small' setup. Not to mention the nice 'gap' in response, seeing as most rec's pass at 80~ on a small setting.

    Who needs 80-125 anyway, right?

I tried it both ways and the mids were very muddy run in full range. Simple A/B testing confirms this for many users, since most receivers only allow crossover settings when used in small mode.

I didn't say to take all the bass off, I can set my crossover as low as 40hz when used in small, but can't control at all in large mode. His HK 525 will go that low if needed.

    YMMV

Excellent replies. Thank you. Still trying to learn the lingo some. The Sub will come in around Mid-Nov sometime, so will only be 2 weeks off without one.

Since we are at it, what sub would you recommend so I dont drown out the other speakers? Or do I have to worry?

    Thanks all, I apprecaite it!

    Matt-

Re: Variable low-pass settings - you could have said that a couple posts ago, and saved me the trouble. The mids shouldn't be affected until you hit at least 62.5Hz on a 2nd order pass. More likely than not, you wouldn't hear a lick of difference until you hit 95Hz or so (3db).

You normally can't have too much sub, only one turned up too high. Start looking in the $400 and up range to get a worthy model. SVS or HSU make some nice models.

Yeah, I was speaking specifically to his model of receiver. Each brand handles it a little differently. I have the HK 7200 and it has the same C/O limitations when using the receiver's filters.
