I also paid $600 for a new one about one month ago from an authorized dealer (who has since dropped Denon). On audiogon, they go for about $400 used.

Got mine on the Gon for $500 about 6 months ago, so around $400 now sounds about right. Luckily the one I got will play anything I throw at it, even scratched DVD's from Netflix. They're a steal at the current price - unless you realllllly need upcoverting HDMI video.

    Hey IOMIC:

I have the same LSi setup (LSi9, LSiC, and LSiFX) and am currently using my Sony ES30 receiver. I am looking to go with a separate amp and am strongly considering Parasound (the New Classic 5250). Did you ever run your LSis with a receiver prior to your Halo amp and if so, was there much of an improvement in sound quality? Thanks JEFF

Is this typical of Denon's players? I got my DVD-3800 for $299 from Tweeter a year ago and it complains anytime a disc isn't perfectly clean. Small scratches, prints and dirt cause skipping or a disc simply not loading. Maybe I need to use the 5 year warranty I bought and get it fixed?

I bought my Denon 3800 brand-spanking new in November 2002, and has start to acting up. The symptoms that you described above is actually very common problem. Right now, my Denon is possessed. Drawer ejecting in and out by itself. It takes a good 5-10 minutes before it reads any DVDs. I doin't think it's worth buying 5 year warranty on this machine, since it's been proven to have design flaw. Wait for the Blu-Ray player next year, would be my strategy.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

I'm running my LSi7 rears off my H/K 330 and it seems to do a fine job - the load on rear speakers is always so low I couldn't justify spending $150+/channel to drive them. I intentionally got my Parasound and LSi9's at the same time to avoid ever hooking them up to the H/K - because I only listen at high volumes anyway, I didn't even want to know how bad it might be.

I did have one experience with an AVR + LSi15's at a Tweeter store. I wanted to see how an SACD would sound (before I got my 2900) on the LSi's so I asked the guy to pop in DSOTM. He used a mid-range Sony the drive the LSi15's and it was the worst thing I'd ever heard in my life - and the guy demoing it didn't seem to notice. I walked out of the room without saying a word after 5 seconds.

Anyway, I'd generally advise anyone to get a seperate amp - though I doubt you'll hear much difference between a new and old Parasound, especially $1000+ worth. If you need GOOD looking components for WAF then Halo is worth the money, if not I'd say go with a used late 90's model off Audiogon.

Nope, it seems to be a lot of Denons won't play scatched discs, which is why I consider myself so lucky ;)

I just checked Ebay's completed listings (only goes back 2 weeks) and the price for a used 2900 is mostly between $400 and $500.

Yes, the amps make a big difference in sound. I was using the yame for all five lsi speakers. Then I bought a 3 channel (185@4ohms) b&k amp. Big difference. Last week I bought a b&k 2 channel(385x4ohms) and again an improvement in sound with all channels driven. I am very happy with the sound of the set-up now. Last thing I need is a good dvd player.
