I don't have children but Hallowen is not a safe celebration as far as I'm concern.

I agree with you. Even if I didn't disagree with the basics of what haloween is, it's not 'a safe celebration'.

Oh lighten up. Halloween is supposed to be fun. I never understand why people get their dresses over their heads about it. They got it shut down in some shcool because some way-too-uptight parents were offended by it.

Its about dressing up, parties and candy.

Well, another Halloween over and done. I take the little fellow out and Mom stays home. The temp this year -7, not bad. End result, Mom had 3 kids, the little guy scored way too much. Time to take some of the 100 bads of chips, cheeses, doritos left over from home to the people at work. Happy Halloween everyone.

HALLOWEEN is becoming a thing of the past, regrettably. or more so, it's "evolving". kids used to roam the streets as if they were some sort of mob run amuck. nowadays the neighborhoods seem more like a ghost town. (not because of the kids dressed in sheets, smartasses) sure, kids now gather in "designated" neighborhoods as opposed to just walkin' the streets and trick or treating till 11 pm. but it's just not as fun as it used to be.

It is ALL ABOUT KIDS HAVING FUN. People who object to KIDS HAVING FUN need to re-direct their energies.

That being said, we had 4 takers last night, and 2 of them haven't developed vocabularies yet. The light turn-out is the result of the Grand home being separated from the rest of our development by a 45mph road. In stark contrast to when I grew up and could have been trick or treating on the Long Island Expressway for all my parents knew.

kids are most definately not as independant as before. i ran about the streets and learned life-lessons alot on my own. didn't have nagging parents crowding me all the time. but i find myself not letting my kids even walk down to the park on their own. times have changed. safety itself has changed. how many of us wore helmets when riding our bikes when we were little tykes? now it is madatory kids wear 'em. safety is a good thing, but i'm more worried about the learning of independance. kids don't learn and experience things on their own. we parents try to teach them everything. most lessons are better learned through first hand experience. i just don't want my kids to experience danger, though. what's a dad to do?

What's a dad to do? Buy another amp to assuage your angst.

There were just as many wack jobs running around when I was a kid. It's just that back then it wasn't considered fashionable to be one of them.

    Helmets are mandatory?

In 16 years... I have never owned... or wore a helmet... or any other type of safety device...

I got a feeling the world outside this small community is quite a bit different... this neighborhood is rather safe - I've free-roamed this area for the past... 8 years or so. Fun times... I know this area like the back of my hand...

woo hoo... go non-safe times and play!

    Halloween is FUN!

i'm just soured by the low turn-out of kids through my neighborhood. twice a year our local waste management company does "bulk" pickup of large items such as cut down trees and shrubbery as well as things like large appliances, stoves, and fridges and things of the sort. you are supposed to place all items by your front curb. geez, who's friggin' dipshit idea was it to have our week for pickup begin on a day such as halloween, when kids roam all around. it's a safety hazard and potential vandalism threat, let alone very ugly for the neighborhood. kids had to watch where they walked in the dimmer parts of the neighborhood.

    1) Times haven't changed THAT much. I'm not at all old, but the only reason things SEEM so unsafe is the proliferation of the media and the fact that we hear every bad story 30 times.
    2) The 'not a safe celebration' thing. Honestly. Like George the Great said, they're kids having CLEAN FUN. There's no drugs or crime involved, it's CLEAN FUN. You stick-in-the-muds keep taking this kind of stuff away from them, that's how they get into much worse stuff. It's no more unsafe than having your kids play outside any otehr day. What're you gonna do, lock em in teh basement? GREAT plan.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Hey, Halloween is alive and well. I remember 20 years ago when it looked like it was over. School/community parties seemed to be pushing trick or treating aside. Well, that hasn't happened, instead parents now walk with their kids. This may seem to end the independence, but on the good side vandalism is way down.
