I have a receiver with a subwoofer RCA output for bass management for all areas in 5.1, i.e. center, FL, FR. The subwoofer apparently has connections for FL and FR only and I can compensate for this by directing all bass management to the FL and FR speakers through menus on the receiver.
My question --- is there a way to use the subwoofer with the subwoofer output jack on the receiver?

Yes. Connect all the satellites directly to the receiver and then run a single RCA cord from the "sub out" of the receiver to either L or R line in on the subwoofer. Turn the "low pass" knob as high as it will go clockwise. On the receiver, in the set up menu, set the "crossover frequency" to "120 Hz" and all the speakers to "small" and subwoofer to "yes".
This will allow you to use the subwoofer output jack.-Eric

Side note- if your receiver shuts the subwoofer out off in 'stereo' or 'direct' mode, then this would not be the optimal way to hook it up. However if you never use stereo or direct, or want to shut the sub off for late night 'quiet mode' watching then this would be ok.-Eric
