PSW10 50W Power....?

Hi....is anybody here can actually explain why Polk Audio has built a subwoofer with only a 50W power? Other subs like Velodyne and Rel has their products rated the least @ 150W power / 300+ peak.

Isn't it this PSW10 might look under rated in the audio world compareed to other subs with a minimum power of 150W+? As you know, if I wanted to upgrade my front speakers, I'm having a difficulty in looking for a match because the PSW10 is only 35Hz @ 50W whereas the prospective speakers that I'm planning to buy is at 38Hz-30Khz response and rated 120W.

It's more of a practical reason over anything.

It allows them to price the sub low and still keep decent quality, surprisingly, 50 watts is ample for most people. Some of us wouldn't have any less than too loud (I personally run 600 watts out of 2 - 12" on my SVS PB12-ISD/2) And the lower power subs just aren't for us. Other companies make low power subs like Polk's, just not as much as they used to.

Velodyne makes mostly sealed subs even though they have 1 line of ported ones I believe & I think Rel subs are all sealed. right? But anyways polk subs are ported so that allows them to run smaller amps wheres a buget sealed sub with 50w just wont cut it at all so maybe thats the reason why you will see a little larger amps in the velodynes & rel's.

Well first of all, the power amplifier rating is only one piece of the puzzle. In subwoofer design, there is also- type of enclosure (sealed, vented, bandpass, hornloaded, transmission line etc), driver diameter, driver excursion, driver motor strength, box tuning (where applicable), quality of materials used, and then the most importantly the price point. At the price of the PSW10, it is able to compete that of other manufacturers' offerings.

This sub is not for everybody, particularly if you like earth shattering bass in a very large room. Thus, we make larger, more powerful subs.

But will a 35Hz PSW10 can be a good match for a loudspeakers @ 38Hz (120W rms peak)?

What speakers are you going to use the sub with? That would be better information than the frequency response.

Generally, unless they are low end speakers, I doubt that sub will cut it.

Sir....I'm planning to buy next month to replace my Polk M30 as fronts a pair of either Polk M50, RTi6 or the UK-Made Monitor Audio Silver S6. I'll make the M30 as my surround stuffs.

I don't know if my PSW10 will complement or match the MA S6 (38Hz-30Khz). The S6 can produced a good deep bass @ 38Hz right or will I still be needing the depth of my PSW10 @ 35Hz?
