New or Refurbed?

Here's the question:

A new Denon 3805 for around $750-800 or a refurbed one for around $650? What do you guys think? Is there that big of a difference? What is your experience with refurbed products?

I have no problem buying used, as long as it comes in one piece.

Holla back.

My 3803 is "B" stock and I've had no problems with it..though I think that for $100 difference I would go with the new one.

If the price difference were greater, I would go refurb. In this case, the difference is only $100-$150 so I would buy new. Often times refurb gear has a lesser warranty than new. I have seen 90 day warranties on refurb gear quite frequently.

Yeah, I was kinda thinking $100 is a large sum, too. But when you think about paying $650 for something that you're gonna keep and use a lot for quite a while that may or may not last and only has a 90 day warrantly versus $750 for something you know should work perfectly and if it doesn't has a long warranty period....it may be worth the extra $100.

I'd look at used, personally. You can use it for whatever time period you wish then sell it for approximately the same price and move up the food chain with no wasted money. Everyone wins. You, the fellow you bought it from and the fellow you sell it to.

If you can purchase a new one for $750, why would you look at and used one for $700. Surely the 1 year manufacturer's warranty is worth that additional price. If I can purchase a used one for 75% or less of the retail value, I consider it. Other than that I, feel the risk is high, no warranty and then what. On the other hand buying from someone you know & trust is worth something. Just my opinion. Good Luck.

If you really wanted the dvd player too it would be ok but I bet you can snag one cheaper if you keep at it. Overall about 50% of msrp seems to be an ok deal, %35 to %40 is normally what I go for. The best thing to do is keep an eye on them for a little while. Another thing I find is that the higher the class of component the better the deal you can find. For example, generally a $400 item may go for $275 whereas a $1500 item may go for $600. Look ahead at what you will be happy with 3 years from now and shoot for that if possible. It all depends on where you are headed.

Edit: Oh, a big part of deal shopping is to keep your eyes open for other options. If you focus too intensly on a particular model you more than likely will miss one three steps up going for the same price.

Excellent points. Thank you and they are well taken. I have been looking at Outlaw pre/pro but nothing used can i find anywhere... and i can't spend the money on a new one, out of my range at this time. So i am settled for a denon AVR. The 3805 fits my needs, tho the 3806 seems nice with special features i would use. I've expanded my searching for used to include these others... There is a NEW 3805 on ebay for $665 right now. That is just under the 50% you mentioned. Not bad for new eh? I'll keep looking. No rush to miss a good deal.

It's mostly luck and having the ready cash when you run across something. For some reason it seems that when you really want something everyone else does too. I normally look for a little while then make my best choice. I've found deals that I could never find again but have also made a purchase and found it for much less the next day. No one is always lucky. :)
    Good luck!

I had bad luck with a Denon 2900 refurb, I ended up sending it back for a new one, now that is DVD not a receiver but for a measly 100.00 bucks I would get the new one. You should watch Audiogon.com for deals and to get a good feel for values, it costs nothing to look. The gear there and the people who do business there are generally a bit better than that on the E-Pay.
