I have three cousins and their families not too far from you Larry, over in the Winter Haven and Haines City areas. They'll be riding it out with you.

    Hi Bob,

Thanks. It's good to hear from you.

I guess it's no coincidence that your relatives live in Polk County? ;)

hey Larry. Looking over the Weather Channel right now. This is certainly GREAT news. Maybe by the time it hits the Fl. coast, it won't even be a tropical depression.

    Hi Andrew,

We can certainly hope, but I think that's it's very unlikely that the storm will diminish to that degree. I'm going to attempt to attach two files showing a current local hour by hour forecast of the weather conditions in Sarasota for the next 36 hours. The one labeled Sunday 23rd is for today from 1:00 PM to 6:00 AM tommorrow morning. The other file labeled Monday 24th is for tommorrow morning at 7:00 AM to 6:00 AM Tuesday morning.

I believe these forecasts are based on the hurricane making landfall along the current forecast track which is around Naples, about 120 miles South of Sarasota.

12:30pm. Just talked to my father in bradenton/sarasota. He said it's warm and sunny outside. Thinking the storm could possibly hit land about 150 miles south of them.

    Hi Bob,

No, not strange at all. You folks are just genetically predisposed to being Polk enthusiasts. Your brother Mike is just as nutty as you about Polks, right? See...genetically predisposed. You can't help it, it's in your genes. :D

    Hi Andrew,

Yes, it was sunny at that time, but not now. About an hour ago we had our first tornado warning in Southern Sarasota county. A warning means a water spout or a tornado was actually sighted. Whereas a tornado watch means that the conditions are right for tornados. We'll probably be in a tornado watch until tommorrow. The hurricane strength has slightly intensified to 103 mph.

The good news is that with the hurricane nearing, the cone of uncertainty is narrowing. So Sarasota is no longer in the cone which means that is is unlikely that we will sustain a direct hit. However, the sustained winds I posted earlier which go up to 67 mph are very likely with gusts of up to 80 or 90 mph. With those gusts it's also very likely that I won't have electric service so I probably won't be able to continue updating this thread come Monday morning. :(

    Hi Andrew,

Well, as far as Sarasota is concerned, I think you can breath easier. It appears that the worst has passed, but it would still be unwise for residents to get on the roads until utility crews can assess the damage.

I believe the forecasted sustained winds for Sarasota that I posted earlier were about 20 mph higher than actual. I don't believe that there have been any reports of hurricane force winds, even in gusts.

Here's hoping that Wingnut and the East coast fares as well.

Glad that ALL of you are safe, the corp. that I work for lost 3-4 hospitals in La. and Miss. Two will not be rebuilt, the loss results in a 10% decline of our company's gross revenues,,wanna guess what comes next :(
