I wanted to check with others on something a salesperson at Tweeter told me.

I told him that I purchased an HDTV TV recently and for the first time in my life, I'm in the market for a surround sound system.

Basically, I don't want speakers that are too big due to the space limitation in my family room but do wnat something that sounds pretty good.

In the showroom, he played a movie on the Denon AVR-3805 (this is a receiver that I do want) and 5 RM202 speakers.

He said that (1) though the RM202 is a center channel it could act as the front and rear speakers also. (2) that the RM202 could be placed horizontally or vertically for the front and rear speakers without affecting the quality.

My question is, do you agree with these two things that he recommended?

He basically recommended these for their size and my price target. But I also want to make sure that I'm not getting into something that I don't want to.

The sound was pretty good and I compared it with the Bose Acoustimass 16 speaker system also. It sounded better than the Bose system.

Whats your budget? Are you willing to buy used or online? We can suggest a much much nicer system if you are willing to work with us and give us details. How much space do you have? Do you want the system for music or movies or both? Do you have any stereo gear already?

I appreciate the offer, but right now I'm looking for the so-called experts to weigh in with their opinion on whether these two items are possible?

    (1) though the RM202 is a center channel it could act as the front and rear speakers also. (2) that the RM202 could be placed horizontally or vertically for the front and rear speakers without affecting the quality.

i'm no expert but dont really see a problem with using 5 of those for your system. you can turn it any way you would like and it should work fine.

one thing i would suggest is that the denon 3805 is a little overkill for these speakers. unless you are planning on upgrading them in the future you could easily step down to the 2805 or 1805 and still drive them fine while saving a few bucks.

Thanks! I appreciate your input. I just wanted to increase my comfort level before spending all this money on my first system.

Well I guess I'm not a so called expert. I was only trying to suggest that for your "price target" you will be able to find a system that you would find much nicer then RM speakers. But hey, why not settle for less. What do I know though.

Any center channel can be used as a main speaker. The difference in Polks center channels is a cascading crossover to help with clarity for off axis listeners. There are people who use Csi40's as mains and a center. There are also people who like the reverse and choose speakers labeled as mains for a center. Some companies, like B&W make speakers designed for the entire forward sound field. Some people think that having the same speakers in front makes the sound field even more seamless. I can't attest to that because I went the traditional route for HT but it makes logical sense.
