I swore an oath to never again ask the noobie question of
"which _____ should I buy?",
so I will ask a little different question. In your opinion could an average guy (me) on average gear(mine) tell the difference between a used Carver (1.0 or 1.5) and a used Rotel 1080/ Conrad Johnson Sonographe 400?. I am in the used 2 channel amp market and had settled on the used Rotel/ CJ. But I am really happy with my Carver M200t(on center-lsic) and have read several glowing reviews of the Carvers. So if anyone has an opinion I would appreciate the thoughts.

I am using a Denon 3805 as my pre and do HT80%/ music 20%. Also I have Rti8's for now with lsi9's in the works.

Happy Wednesday...........kevin

I have different speakers but yes, I can tell a big difference between a Denon 100 watt receiver, a Sonographe 120 amp and a Carver 250 watt amp.

.....and I consider myself an average guy too.... :D

Sorry, I guess I could have phrased the question better. Instead of the old avr/ seperates issue I'm asking if I could tell the difference between a $200-400 Carver and a $700-900 Rotel or CJ. That extra 4 or 5 bills could come in handy elsewhere.

Thanks to Club Polk I'm learning that bigger, flashier and more expensive is not always the answer. And I'm trying to get the most bang for the buck

Going by what I've had, the Carver TFM-35 amp sounds different than the TFM-45. The 45 follows the older M4.0t design, the 35 does not.

Where abouts are you at in West Central Illinois Kevin? I could arrange a demo for you. I also have a Rotel RB-1090 for sale. :D

    Oh really. I hadn't heard that. ;)

I have been in a constant full court press on my wife ever since you posted the Rotel for sale. Times running out, maybe I will get lucky.

Well, if you go for the CJ your 80/20 may start to change, held in very high regard as a musical piece of gear.

To kinda go along with RT1's comment I would think the CJ would certainly have a more refined sound with music. But if you really don't think your 80/20 listening is going to change it may not be worth the extra coin. I honestly don't think HT listening would benefit much from the upgrade.

    Just my $.02
