I think LG looks a little softer than the Samsung, not that that is a bad thing. I'm curious what you are basing the workmanship claim off of? It's rare to see many defective plasma tv's, but I have seen a bad 50" LG (red lines showing up). I would be ok with buying either still.

It is very hard to compair just blanket statements like this without discussing the model numbers...

That said, both companies have their main plasma production facilities in South Korea. Both have similar models avalible as well. As for who's is really better, well, I have seen LG's that look better then Samsung's and I have seen Samsung's that look better then LG's. The whole problem in most situations is the setup at the stores. A poor feed will make any HD system look bad. Even worse, a poor SD feed will truely make a HD display look bad. It is very hard to make real comparisons in the stores unless you actually connect the feeds to the displays using the same souce material, using the same player, and the same transport (i.e. wires). Even though most places state they are connected to equal quality material, they are not in all cases. I have seen Sony HD CRT's look horrible compaired to Poloroid EDTV LCD that was right next to it in the store. Well, turns out that when I unplugged the cable going to the Sony and plugged in the cables that were going to the Poloroid, the Sony then really showed what it was made of. I was proptly yelled at by a salesman nearby for making a change to their setups, and they then changed it back to the way it was. I personally believe they were trying to push the Poloroid set because they couldn't sell them so they rigged the setup to make it look better then other TV's around it, even though the Sony should and does clearly have the better picture. You can and will run into this kind of thing in many stores, so you have to take the demo there with a big helping of reality check.

We had a defective Samsung plasma (dying pixels, not dead) within a week with zero static images... have yet to see a defective LG.

Personally, I wouldn't buy either LG or Samsung. I think Samsung DLP TV's are great, but their plasmas are totally inferior. Cosmetically they look nice, but picture wise they have terrible contrast, and no matter what DVD player or HD source used, they always have that blotchy look, like they're being fed a signal from a Walmart DVD player. And this is with $300+ DVD players, and DirectTV HD feeds w/ high quality component/HDMI cables. LG peforms similarly, although may edge out the Samsung's a bit.

Honestly, if one isn't going to pony up for a truly good and reliable plasma, such as Pioneer Elite or Fujitsu, in my opinion a Panasonic would be the best choice. They have excellent picture quality for the price (maybe a bit too reddish, but that can always be toned down), and the prices have come down like mad. Panasonic units are the best plasmas for the price. A 50" for $4000-that's incredible given the quality. 42" can be had for between $2500-2800 retail. Next to Samsung or LG, there isn't even really a comparison.

This is why we just picked up a Panasonic TH-42PX50U (a 42" built in HDTV tuner 720p display plasma). Picked it up b-stock because there was a scratch on the optional stand and had $600 cut off its price. And get 30 days to do a compete demo to make sure it is fine. One thing that sucks is that the remote was lost so one was ordered but won't show up for a little while, and I can't calibrate it without the remote (no one has posted correct codes for a MX800 universal remote, even though it is in the database, the codes are incorrect, since the "ok" button is really the "menu" button and there is no code for the "ok" button or the "recall" buttons).

Just from what I've read online and that is a lot, if we get a new plasma it will be a panasonic, it looks nice too when it's not turned on.
