Research for paper...

For my English class this semester I'm doing my term paper on Hybrids and Hydrogen fuel cells. I'm not exactly sure what my thesis will be, but I'll either talk about one of the above or compare/contrast the two technologies. [I'll (hafta) know by Friday.]

So far I've looked through the libraries, online (google, yahoo, etc.), and NClive. Are there any more sources that I could use for research that I'm overlooking? Just anything you may happen to think of or have run across, I'd appreciate it if you'd share it with me.

    Hmm, no notes on more research area but you might twist the topic to discuss the development of safety mechanisms of the fuel cell systems and what steps need to be taken before they can safely go mainstream (hydrogen go BOOM!!!) and how until those steps are rectified, hybrids are the only techonology readily available to reduce our dependance on foriegn oil and lesson our impact on the environment.
    There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin

    Possibly the car manufacturer's website. Example...toyota.com or whoever currently makes hybrids. I'm sure you could get at least a quote or two from there.

    I was recently researching the toyota prius (just for fun) and ran across a few owner websites where they talked about the car teaching you how to drive it efficiently and also the aspect of saving gas being looked upon as you would horse power or cornering. Some very interesting thoughts and experiences. I just searched under toyota prius and found them.

    To impress the pants off your professor, it would be great to cite some trade journals. Cite some bleeding edge journal articles.

    I would go ask your librarian which online journal search engine to use. S/he will be best at helping you find what you need. Seriously, I would do that.

    I heard some say that making enough hydrogen to fuel all cars by hydrogen fuel cell would cause us to burn just as much, if not more fossil fuels in the creation of hydrogen for that type of market. I dont know the source of that info, but see if you can find something on it and include it. its a hell of a counterpoint for hydrogen technology if it is in fact true

    shizelbs - I'm certainly showing my ignorance here, but what's a trade journal? I'm going to the library tomorrow, so I'll ask and see what I find out.

    ohskigod - That's a good point. It really depends on how we decide to isolate the hydrogen. Heating it by using fossil fuels is one proposed method. However, nuclear power plants and electrolysis are other viable alternatives.

    I recently heard on the radio that someone has come up with a way to make hydrogen into a "tablet" form. I know no details about it, but thought it was very interesting. I would assume they are trying to come up with a way for easy transport & delivery. It may be worth some research.

    Lou, I've heard things like that as well but that is using the cheapest, dirtiest way to produce H, basically they are ripping it off of natural gas. Electrolysis is probably the ticket. Wht this country really needs to do is build more nuclear reactors and find a better way to contain the waste. I have no proof but I'd be willing to bet that more people die of cancer caused by coal/oil plants than have ever died from nuclear power in the US (it would be interesting to add Chernobyl and see how close the deaths become.)

    4. Who's taking advantage of hybrid technology? How does this factor in for their growth as a company? (What companies are not taking advantage of hybrids- and how does this reflect their overall declining market share)

    5. Who's taking advantage of fuel cell technology?

    6. What demographics are in the market for these technologies? Why?

    Sounds like an interesting subject to cover....

    My next vehicle will be a hybrid, unless our government can wake up and
    start utilizing E85. The technology exists today. It's a renewable resource (corn) and is substantially less polluting than oil. Too bad the decision makers all have their portfollios based on oil stocks. Wouldn't it be nice to dump the billions of dollars into our own economy rather than the mid-east? E85 is much more an answer than hydrogen in the near term.
    Just an idea of another option in your research.

    Norm makes a good point...and it is one thing I miss from living in the mid west. Ethanol is a great alternative and if I had the option, I'd choose to use it anyday.

    LexusNexus is a good suggestion....but it can be confusing the first few times you use it. Ask your librarian for help...it's a great search engine. As stated before, professional, refereed journals will get you the most accurate information.
