subwoofer suggestions

I currently own a pair of LSI 9's. They are used for two channel only. I have a NAD 372 integrated amp. I am looking for a muscial sub that won't break the bank. My room dimensions are 14 wide x 27 long x 9.5 high. There is an 8 ft opening to my kitchen. I have been checking out the SVS and HSU websites and I like both of these manufacturers. My price limit is $500. Also the HSU websiste recommends a high pass filter. Is this needed ? I am new to the world of subwoofers! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks RJKNBAK
