I'm headed down that way in a week and a half. Got any tips for me? Anyone else been to Costa Rica?

Plans are a few days at Jaco and a few days at Arenal.

Try not to spend (waste) time in San Jose, nothing worth to visit, if you can head to Jaco as soon as you arrive... it should take you 2 hours to get there from the Airport.

Make sure you visit La Paz Waterfall Gardens and the Poas Volcano on your way to Arenal...

In Jaco you can stop at Villa Lapas and take the Sky Walk Tour (if you're a tour person)... if you're into surfing you must go to Playa Hermosa just 5 minutes south from Jaco... impressive waves and tons of hot chicks :D

In Arenal you have to go to El Silencio, is the closest spot to watch the Arenal Volcano, really impressive!

All the roads going to Jaco and Arenal are in perfect condition...

Both places are really safe, just be careful and don't walk alone at night (common sense), Jaco is really active (nightlife-wise) and fun town, I have been there at 100+ times :)

You don't need to exchange money, you can bring US Dollars and use them for everything you may need, the areas you'll be visiting are very touristy so pretty much everybody take US Dollars...

    More to come...

    I got your e-mail...

The hotels you choose are excellent destinations, you won't be dissapointed.
Arenal Observatory Lodge is the closest hotel to the Arenal Volcano. Be aware that the road to get to the hotel is not in good condition... you'll be driving for about 15-20 minutes in gravel road, not very comfortable :(

Caletas is up on the hill so to get to the beach you'll have to walk down the stairs (lots and lots of stairs)

    Driving times & directions:
Juan Santamaria Airport - Villa Caletas: 1 hour & 45 minutes
Driving Directions: From San Jose travel west on Hwy 1, the Pan American Hwy pass the Airport towards San Ramon. Take the exit right for Atenas - Los Suenos - Jaco Hwy 34. After the exit turn left and go over the over pass. Passing the towns of Atenas - San Mateo - Orotina - Tarcoles - Herradura then to Villa Caletas (located on the right hand side of the street).

Villa Caletas - Arenal Observatory Lodge: 4 hours
Driving Directions: From Jaco drive north to Tarcoles - Orotina then in San Mateo take a left to Esparza then at the main hwy take right to San Ramon where you will exit and head north to Tigra - San Isidro - Chachugua then to La Fortuna. When you come to a stop sign take a left to the Arenal Volcano.

if you want to stop at La Paz Waterfall Gardens you have to follow this route from Jaco...

Jaco - La Paz Waterfall Gardens
Driving Directions: From Jaco drive north to Tarcoles - Orotina - San Mateo - Atenas then at the Main Hwy 1 take a right into San Jose. Then from San Jose travel west on Hwy 1, the Pan American Hwy to the exit for Alajuela where you will exit to the right and pass through town and continuing on towards Poas Volcano. When you almost reach the volcano the road will split then take a right towards La Paz. You will go about 10 minutes before coming to a gas station on the left and a fruit stand on the right, take a left. Drive about 20 more minutes and La Paz will be on the left.

Make sure the car rental representative gives you a CR Map, you can ask him about driving directions if you have doubts once you here in the country...

If your Credit Card company offers international insurance for car rentals you can decline the Basic Insurance and only pay the LDW... this will save you some money! ;)

Talking about saving money... did you took advantage of the Low Season Special at Caletas?
...Dinning at Caletas is rather expensive, so you may try the Hicaco Restaurant in Jaco, just 15 minutes away from the Hotel... they're well known for their EXCELLENT sea food!

I almost forgot to tell ya about Tabacon Resort in La Fortuna (where the Arenal Volcano is)... you can pay the entrance fee and enjoy their Hot Springs and the Volcano view while sipping a cold beer... :D

I don't think we've got the SR65000's yet, either... Circuit City isn't showing them on the webpage. But if you can find someplace for me to buy them & want to meet me at the airport w/ cash...

Anyhow, I got in on the low season deal & my CC should pick up the CDW. We've got a decent map & I've got a GPS with some fairly good maps on it, too.
