My wife and I are looking to go away down south.

We have it down to 3 areas
1- Cuba
2- Columbia
3- Magarita Island

anyone have experiences with either of these places?

We are looking to go end of Jan or early to mid Feb

thanks

    Willow,

I used to go to Margarita every year when I lived in Venezuela...it is a beautiful place with very friendly people, great food, etc. Not sure how the whole political situation has impacted quality...Do you have a name of a place you would be at? Maybe I can find out how things are....

Have not gone to Cuba, but have heard good things and bad things...

Why isn't Dominican Republic in your list? Just a thought.....I've been in several Caribbean islands and Punta Cana wins hands down in almost everything....

Columbia would be a huge no-no, and I wouldn't go to Cuba either. Good luck with whatever you decide, but people getting snatched up in Columbia doesn't matter what your nationality is. Be safe.

...I've been to DR in December, and it is above 80's....yes, this is "winter" time, but it will not be much different in any other island around, including Margarita. I really recommend you look into this place.....trust me you can't go wrong....

    Got this from www.dominicanrepublic.com:
"The Dominican Republic enjoys a year-round tropical maritime climate. Its location at 17°36' - 19°58' latitude places it on the very border of the tropical zone. Temperatures average 23°C in the early mornings to 32°C at noon time year round. Temperatures rarely falling below 16°C [60°F] nor rising above 32°C [90°F].The lowest temperatures occur in the mountain areas near Constanza, where temperatures have dropped to 0°C, while record highs in the summer have been registered at the border with Haiti, 39°C."

I have not been to any of those you mention. I have spent a lot of time in the Caribbean and Mexico (Yucatan peninsula) and the BEST for my money is Grand Cayman Island. It's not cheap but it is worth it.

If you like fishing...this IS the place to go. Nice scuba diving too. Cave tubing in the interior is cool too. It is a VERY poor county.

I don't think DR is out of the question, I don't care where I go as long as there is all I can eat and drink and I can lie on a beach watch the scenery and smoke cigars. The location is mostly for my wife.

This is where I've stayed at DR; all inclusive, all you can eat/drink, beautiful beaches and surroundings, golf, etc.

Well, the reason for me is obvious, so I'll not comment on it. Other than that, no worries. Know a few people who have been. Columbia, on the other hand, is a scary place. I'm no small fry, but I'd just not want to be worried about my safety when I'm trying to relax.

Ah, I worked in a cigar shop for 5 years, and the man who owns it is one of my dad's best friend. What's your favorite Cuban cigar? My personal opnion is that they're overrated and that it's all hype, at least in this country.

My favorite cigar of all time was the Padron Anniversario from back in 2000. Got a personal phone call from Pedro Padron after a letter I sent him while doing purchasing at Jack's.

My father has been smoking cigars for years, namely Arturo Fuente Canones. They switched the wrap on the cigar to a Cameroon and so he stopped smoking them. He actually had Mr. Fuente personally making him the Canones with the original wrap on them for a while. Thought that was pretty cool.

Anyhow, good luck with your trip.

Communist government is my reason why I wouldn't go to Cuba.

    Viva La Revolution! :p

I've been to Belize and it was great. I went there in October of '99 for my sister's wedding and the weather was great. We were on a small island called Amergris Caye, in a town called San Pedro. The SCUBA diving was phenominal! I made one diving trip with three dives and it was absolutely gorgeous. The first dive was 170' deep in the Great Blue Hole and the other two were along the coral reef at 70' and 35'. I've also heard good things about Cuba, but agree that you should stay away from Columbia unless you have kidnapping insurance!

    The Great Blue Hole:

I know about the 'n' with the tilde, but I didn't know how to get it to pop up on the computer. How am I supposed to do the 'Alt+164'? I can't get that to work.

You just press "Alt", and while keeping it pressed you type 164; then release the "Alt" key and you're done. This does not work if you use the numbers in the top of your keyboard; you must do it in the numeric pad at the right.
