I would go HDMI from DVD player and component from cable box. If your dvd player only upconverts via and HDMI connection then you definately should stay that route.
As far as HDMI vs Component vs DVI thats a whole nother discussion. Long story short..sometimes its better sometimes its not..its all depends on the equipment attached to it and the signal coming in etc..quite a few variables involved. You will be safe with the route i suggested above and still get great picture quality. -
You also could think about picking up a HDMI switch. I would try it both ways first, see if there really is an image quality difference using HDMI over component for your cable box. If HDMI really does look better, then think about investing in a good HDMI switch. In good, I mean one that allows a remote control to do the switching, and accepts multiple HDMI+HDCP connections at full resolution/bandwidth...

For video HDMI = DVI, they are just different plugs. I would use HDMI/DVI for the HD box so there are less conversions on the signal and use component for the DVD.

Also see what cable boxes you can get... one of the TWC ones we've got here has a DVI/hdmi input that passes through when you turn off the cable box.Gallo Ref 3.1 : Bryston 4b SST : Musical fidelity CD Pre : VPI HW-19
