I'd probably pass unless it went for under $50 and I had ideas about how to fix such a problem. I wouldn't get it and plan on putting up with the problem. It needs to be fixed before it blows up a decent speaker or something.

    Gonzo,

Why are you interested in the Adcom amps? Did you read something about them that made them more desirable than maybe an outlaw, Nad, Rotel, or Parasound?

    Just trying to learn. *smile*

The seller must have been told it would cost a lot to fix it or else he wouldn't be selling it. Since the seller gave a description of the problem, maybe you can try to call a local service center and get an estimate out of them. It may not be exact but at least you will have a rough idea of repair cost..
    Receiver: harmankardon AVR235
    Mains: polk R30
    Center: polk CSi3
    Rear Surrounds: polk R20
    Subwoofer: polk PSW404
    DVD: Panasonic DVD-S29
