Is it a good idea to purchase a refurb HK? What would be the best place to get it from? HK?

Great idea to buy from HK. Refurb means they went through it with a fine tooth comb to fix everything, buying from HK ensures a warrenty. There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin

aaharvel,
How do you like your 235 with the RTi4's? I was thinking of getting the monitor 30's and wondering what HK to get. -
They also have a website (www.harmanaudio.com) with all their refurb stuff, if you don't want to deal with the bidding.
I've heard a few people have issues with buying refurbs but all had good customer service dealings and eventually had all their issues resolved. If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
harmanaudio via ebay is the way i went. yes, factory warranty. they've already made good on it. first one did not output enough power to the rear channels. all good now. ebay is cheaper than their website, so long as the bidding does not climb too high. remember to include the price of shipping.

Yes....if you decide to bid on ebay, make sure you check their web site for reference to define your max. price..
For the HK-3480 I put as example above, the price at their web is $198, and many people paid more than that on ebay... actually I paid 2 bucks more...._________________________________________________

I was one of those people. My first AVR235 refurb had a dead surround left channel and another problem that was minor. I can say that HK customer service was very quick and professional. They even shipped the defect and the replacement 2nd day air as per my request.
I would recommend them anyday. Their refurbs come with a two year warranty and are also very clean.
Like others said, just make sure you don't get into a bidding war with somebody, as there are always more available.Receiver: harmankardon AVR235

They usually have 1 or 2 up everyday, 24 hour auction. The store is called Harman Direct. If you're patient, you might snag one for < $250, but they average ~ $275. Some states have to pay sales tax (I did). They go for $300 plus shipping on the harmanaudio.com site. I tried on several before I was successful at the price I wanted. There's always a rush during the last minute, so watch for one at the right price, then give it a shot at the end.
Good luck...

they sound great together. The 235 has plenty of power for these size of speakers- and it's the least expensive H/K with +/-35 amps of current, 7.1 and most importantly- PREOUTS.
Monitor30's are decent- for $60 more I recommend the rti4. Much better speaker imo. -
Guys,
I just noticed that there is no sound coming out of my right speaker, but I little sound and occasional crackling. What is it? The speaker or the outs on the receiver? -
It works in stereo mode. From tv it does not.

Actually, I lost the bid..and got a "second chance" offer; I guess every bidder that goes over their web price and does not win gets one of these...._________________________________________________

This is how I got my reciever. I was only looking for something to use as a temporary piece of gear. I won an auction on a refurb DPR-1001 last Thanksgiving weekend for $200! Well, I am still using it as a pre-processor (not using its amplifiers). The reciever itself was in excelent condition and I still recieved the full warrenty since it was from HK direct. They really do go over the units extensively.

Hey Fallen....some of us are still wondering how someone that joined CP on September 26, was at PolkFest and got the freebies (including the tuna...)...
Tell us your story...._________________________________________________

Well, I finally decided to start posting :P I've been reading along with John Stasny Jr. for the last year or two (since I sit a 1/2 cubicle away). Never took the time to bother registering and posting along until now (since everyone just loves a guy who had too many EE courses :cough: :cough:, but I decided I liked doing other things better then designing circuits and changed to Comp Sci, but hey once you have those signals classes, it never leaves you... )
Anyway... I've been working building up my home theater for the last few years now. Had a couple different products that I tried out, and finally settled on speakers last year. But now that I have the theater done, I am looking for 2 channel (not that I have space for one). Its a whole new ball game really when you think about it. I have to say that I am kicking myself for not picking up a set of SDA-1C's, but I just don't have room to put them...
Lets see, my real experience is in electronics (which is why I didn't really sign up since speaker wise, I know I have a lot to learn). But finally decided to start posting at least in some of the setup/config (since I have done that a LOT lately), and in the electronics areas.
