I have been considering taking the next step here in my little hobby and getting an EQ for my system to customize it for my space. After doing a little reading though, I am more confused than ever. What exactly do I need to EQ my room? My understanding is a BFD( or similar product), a microphone of some sort (and an amp?), a cd such as Rives, Rca cables and a plotting diagram. Am I missing anything? After the system is EQ'd then what? Does the BFD stay hooked up to the system? Sorry for the dumb questions but I am a little lost. TIA

The BFD is used to tame peaks in your frequency response. Yes, it must stay connected to your system. Just think of it as an EQ.

Ok. Thanks. Have most people here found that it is worth doing? I mean ..how much improvement does it make really?

Sometimes having a more "accurate" frequency response doesn't make it sound "better". For instance, I helped a friend smooth out his bass response, BUT, for movies, the "inaccurate" bass peaks actually made the movie more enjoyable.

Also, I have a really good "house curve" at 16-25Hz and have no desire to tame it.

The story might be different for a 2-channel music only rig.
